I kind of love BOO for doing this.
Sure it was a 100% dick move. One my moral values would prevent me from doing.

But this is what all of you PVP lovers wanted.
If you all wanted for pvp to be free, unregulated in all places except sanctuary moon. This is it.
    This is unregulated pvp.
They dont care about you, your feelings or your event. And you support this rule set they used.

Most of you expected your little org to have a blast killing others, but now you are the pray.

Next time, think this through before asking for a system that makes only 1 winner and 99 losers.

They will never understand.  Also, incase people here are slow, this is DU not star wars.  Sure you are free to build replicas, but you arent entitled to ANY space in the game you cant actively defend.  This game will never thrive because a few nerds wanna go LARPing in pvp space. You want star wars? Go watch the fucking movies or play one of the games that has the rights to the IP.  The rest of us sane adults want dual universe.  The stupidity around these parts can be astounding at times.

    a statement from our leader:
"Hello everyone, Sylva, leader of Band Of Outlaws here.

This thread, the official DU discord and the Memeserver have all gotten a lot of traffic and I thought I would drop by and leave some of my thoughts here for you all. I acknowledge and understand that the Star Wars fans who created the event feel that we, BOO and some of our allies, when crashing their event yesterday, "ruined it." And yes, Skilo has it right when he says that we did it because we could. Those of you who are arguing against the Star Wars IP being in the game... well, tbh, I love Star Wars, it has inspired more than one generation of space dreamers, and hopefully, many more to come. That having been said, there is more to this story (and hopefully, for the story of Dual Universe).

We originally had someone sign up for the Star Wars event who was building a legit PvP meta Star Wars ship. At the time, I was advised that we were also giving info to the Star Wars group on how to build PvP meta ships, and that advice was generally not followed/heeded. As the date loomed closer it became apparent that the ship, according to our standards, was only about 10% complete, and so our member withdrew from the Star Wars event.

We then heard that ATOM was being paid to provide security for the event, and that was when we decided to party crash it.

The thing is, when you look at what Dual Universe intends to be, a civilization building game - there should, in my opinion, player made safe zones in which events like this could be held in. This is an event that you would hold in the heart of an area that has an enforced edge of space, so pirate incursions would be few and far between (and not be without repercussions). We very much support this. We expect to be hunted down because of our actions. We will be disappointed if we aren't.

We already don't hunt the small fries. We already do not pursue freighters and small ships. We have historically only hunted the larger org tagged ships. Our groups already PvP against each other. We haven't done a PvP event since the End of the World event in December. Since then we have only had solos and small groups go out for PvP, which has still been few and far between. Mostly we have been doing the same as everyone else, recovering from the .23 patch, mining, industry, and building more ships. We got bored. We crashed the party and ruined a lot of hard work, and for what? Some laughs... and hoping to fight some ATOM and some hopefully buffed Star Wars capital ships.

As to the idea of waiting for DU to grow more... you may very well get what you request. BOO has diversified our gaming interests. We are playing Valheim, Starbase, and Last Oasis in addition to Dual Universe now. Don't worry though, we're still around and will still be active in Dual Universe. We will sporadically come out and throw down. So try to be prepared for us. Build meta ships. Bring your friends. You don't know when we will strike.

Prepare for the changes that are coming. " - Sylva, on page 5 of this thread

I also have no writing experience and english is not my native language. But I had some ideas in my mind and decided to write this story that fits into existing lore but adds waste new future possibilities (opened doors) to the DU universe :-)

What you see is Chapter 1 that I started to write 4 hours ago. We will see if I can get up to required 5000 words before the contest ends. So far it's only 1200+ words across 4 pages, but I didn't have much time and can't be sure if I can finish it before end of the contest. So there is no reason for me to hold it off and you can enjoy it right now.

Danger got a reaction from AUTO6PL in MagicaVoxel Editor - Easy prototyping for anyone
Ok, I've seen some people creating posts about Sketchup or even Blender. Don't get me wrong, they are great tools, but totally hardcore and not easy to understand by significant part of player base. I did some research few days ago and was looking not for perfect results (I will look for those later in game), but for tool that will allow me easy and fast prototyping.

    And I found this...

    MagicaVoxel (https://voxel.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=MagicaVoxel%20Editor&referringTitle=Home)
    - quickly prototype anything you want with cubes and save it as .vox (no slopes, but for prototypes it doesn't matter and there is way to auto-add them in the renderer)

    MagicaVoxel Renderer (https://voxel.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=MagicaVoxel%20Renderer&referringTitle=Home)
    - load your .vox and render cool pictures out of them to show your friends (allows multiple settings as shadows, background, grid visibility, etc.)

Some may say they want perfection. Ok, go use Blender. But those looking for prototyping can create really huge things much faster. I'm going to make tutorial soon and if you are interested in it, you are free to join the Alpha Academy. It's open community for everyone interested in the technical side of game and it's no problem if you are already in organization. See more in the org description or on our discord.

Dual Universe seems to be coming to an Alpha release just as the Oculus, HTC Vive and similar Virtual Reality headsets are becoming more and more popular, so I'd like to discuss what that capability could mean for organizations and the individual in DU as far as exploration, building, combat, etc. and how one might gain advantages or come to a disadvantage over the course of the Alpha, Beta and obviously through the final release. For example, I think building, using the two handheld units that go along with the HTC Vive (given you're able to afford the 700$ price tag) could mean incredible things not only for the overall experience of building but the efficiency as well. Please leave a comment with what you look forward to doing in DU with whichever VR headset you choose to utilize in-game.

Danger got a reaction from Kurock in Physical Ruby, No DAC's?
Every single item in any bundle has some specific value and the number of items you get is balanced across all bundles. Some of the packs have also Lifetime subscription, that is equal to 80 DAC (this is ratio set by developers).

    Now, the physical vs digital:

Ruby Physical has extra physical items.
Ruby Digital has no physical items but same price, so the difference in price is balanced with 20 DAC.

If you get the math, physical items for Ruby pack are equal to 20 DAC. And it's only your choice if you pick physical items or virtual currency.

If you are still not happy with answer, I'm pretty sure that if you asked developers after game launch that you want to get your lifetime subscription replaced with 80 DAC, they would do it for you :-)

Plus, at 20% - 40% operational efficiency, a much smaller ship could even take you out. Part of the decrease in effectiveness (most of it, actually,) would come from less accurate targeting. So a small ship with a full crew (even if that is just the pilot,) should be able to dodge most of the "autoship" shots, especially if they fly really close to it, like the X-wing pilots in Star Wars did in order to destroy the Death Star.

I think that they will allow automated turrets in the end as everyone wants it. It just needs to be well balanced so it's always better to control it manually. And that can be done by penalizing the turret performance when used by AI. Making turrets operate at 20-40% of performance compared to player-driven would be quite ok.

Some of you can oppose that players could create solo-crew ships with many automated turrets, the quantity would beat quality. Well, yes and no. You could mount many turrets, but those have weight and energy. You can only mount limited amount of those depending on your ship size and power capacity. And if you really want to do that and encounter ship of similar size, you are going to be fish food. Not even slight chance to beat similar-size ship, it's simple math: 20-40% vs 100% firepower.

In other words, simply penalizing automated turrets performance would be perfect balance between those who want to have full combat capability with full crew and those who still want to build and enjoy bigger ships but have incomplete crew.

What is Novawrimo?   Novawrimo is a contest inspired from "Nanowrimo" (National Novel Writing Month, in short) that happens during the month of November (from the 1st November to the 30th of November). The goal of NanoWrimo is to write a 50,000 word story in 30 days. http://nanowrimo.org/   Novawrimo is a contest slightly different: - It's not tied to the month of November (meaning there might be more than one contest of this kind in a year). - To be accessible to a broader range of participants, the minimum size of the text is lowered to 5,000 words (which is already a significant). The ideal would between 5,000 and 10,000 words. But if you are really inspired, There is no real hard limit.      The rules:   - The current Novawrimo contest starts today, Tuesday, the 15th of November, at 9.30 PM PST Hour. - It will end Thursday, the 15th of December, at 9.30 PM PST Hour.  - The story should be compatible with what is known from the Dual Universe backstory so far. For reference: The Official Dual Universe Lore Bible The short story written by Alain Damasio The Backstory Page of the official website (Should you spot an inconsistency between the different sources, consider always the Official Lore Bible as the reference) - The story must happen between 2436 and 12477. (one century prior to the Arkship launch from Earth and before the Arkship "Novark" lands on Alioth) - No alien creature should be involved. - Physical violence should be limited (No gore or similar things).  - Verbal violence and cursing is tolerated but must stay limited. - Explicit sexual content isn't allowed. - Hate speeches toward specific people, ethnic group, or religion from the real life isn't allowed. - You must submit your text under the form of a PDF file and you must attach it to a dedicated topic (with the tag [Novawrimo] in the title) you created in the "Novaquark Archives" forum section. The PDF file must not exceed 500 ko in size. - By submitting a fan fiction with the tag [Novawrimo] in the topic title, the poster will explicitly cede author rights to Novaquark. While these texts won't be sold under any form, they might be used (fully or partially) as promotional materials in marketing campaign for the game Dual Universe. For more information on this part, read the "Terms of Use" PDF file attached to this topic.   Rules Update (17/11/2016):
    - The fan fiction submitted must be written in English.
    -  A non-native English writer can seek help from a native English speaker to polish the text in English. - The native English speaker must be aware that it can help only on a volunteer basis: he won't be eligible for any reward. - If a non-native English writer seek help from a native English speaker, he must submit the complete text before proofreading. Once his text is proofread, he will have to keep both pre-proofread and post-proofread versions of the text available. - On a similar topic, we prefer to precise that if several participants write a text together, only the one submitting the text on the forum will be eligible, as there will be only one prize per text.   Special Thanks to Yamamushi:   As the one who helped us to shape this event and helped on the rewards side of the contest, we thank him deeply for his involvement! As he plans to participate to the contest as well, in order to avoid any conflict of interest, he agreed for not being eligible for any reward.     The rewards:   1st Prize:  - 1 Digital Gold Founder Pack - 1 key for Osiris: New Dawn - 1 key for Space Engineers - 1 key for Empyrion   2nd Prize: - 1 Digital Silver Pack - 1 key for Space Engineers - 1 key for Empyrion   3rd Prize: - 1 Bronze Pack  - 1 Closed Beta Key - 1 key for Empyrion   Community Prize: - Unique in-game title: "Famous Writer"     How the winners will be selected:   - For the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes, the winners will be selected by the Novaquark team. - For the Community Prize, the community members will vote for their favorite fan fiction.     If you have any question, just let us know! Danger reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in DevBlog: Scanning & Mining
(Posted Friday 4th of November 2016 on the DevBlog)

Some progress on the mining game mechanics

In this Devblog, we aim to shed some light on a very important part of the future gameplay of Dual Universe: scanning & mining. What follows is our current thinking on these features, as we are currently implementing them. This may still evolve in the future, in particular thanks to your feedback! So, let’s have a look.   Scanning is the activity of prospecting to find new resources in the ground on planets. Resources are physically geographically located, they have a span and a size, and they are generated via our procedural algorithms together with the planet as voxel blobs. They will be spread on the planets based on rarity and how important they actually are in crafting recipes. Some rare resources will not be found on Alioth, the starting planet, so you will have to journey out into the universe to locate them.. Each biome will have a set of typical resources associated with it, so prospecting starts by “knowing your biomes” The table below presents a simple rough description of how we plan to stage the levels of difficulty for materials:           Our current plans for prospecting are focused on two scanning techniques: radial scanning and directional scanning.   Radial scanning will allow you to probe for a given class of material in a given radius: the scanner will be able to show you what percentage of the area you’re scanning is made up of the class of material you are seeking. It’s only partial information. You won’t know where it is exactly, just that 1.6% of the volume of your scanning sphere is filled with metal, for example. A scan “operation” will take some time. Longer scans will yield more precise measurements. There will be a level of imprecision in the exact size of the radius, which you will be able to improve via skills.   How does it work? Well, most of the time, the thing you are looking for will not be in the sphere you are probing. So, you’ll see a 0% signal reading. You will then move and suddenly, a signal will show up. You know that your sphere has just “hit” a vein of what you are searching for. At this moment, you will be able to deploy a sphere marker, that will basically help you to visualize the volume where your target material is likely located.. The marker will stay there while you move to another location and start again. By intersecting markers you will start to be able to pinpoint more precisely where your precious material is located. This is the general idea.   Now, the exact technique you will use will also depend on the type of veins that correspond to the material you are looking for and what kind scanner you have. Consider these two schema that illustrate different strategies depending on the relative size of the average vein compared to the radius of the scanner (the double circling of the spheres illustrate the imprecision on the radius):                 These strategies will be important to master, because mining randomly will just exhaust your time and resources and will usually return only very common and not very worthwhile materials. Mining gear will have fixed scanning ranges that correspond to their levels. You won’t be able to adjust these ranges or change the scanning radius. They’re fixed. So, no choice: you need to move!   Now, once you start to have a better idea where you material is, you might start to use the directional scanner. This is much more straightforward. The directional scanner will give you the amount of the 4 or 5  most significant materials within a cone of a few degrees in the direction you’ve pointed your scanner.. The max distance will be a level dependent parameter, but will remain relatively small so you need to use radial scanning first to narrow your search area. The signal received for a given piece of material will decrease with distance, which should give you precious “gradient” information to follow. This is roughly how this could look:           In some future expansion we will probably add some more advanced tools for prospectors as well as planetary scale global information to help you judge the potential of newly discovered planets.   Our vision for this gameplay (as well as most of the gameplay of Dual) is to make it deep. We want players to be able to develop their own very real expertise on best practice, specializations, etc. We want the activity of prospectors to remain challenging even when you master it, so that a good prospector will have a very high value as part of a team. Now, for easy and abundant materials, it will be possible to find resources much more easily (we are considering a simple local highlight of what is there, so you just “see” it). But for the more rare and uncommon materials, we want it to be rewarding and feel like a real achievement. We provide the tools, but players will have to come up with the best strategies to get to the most precious material. The way you dig for gold as a beginner, and the way you will approach it after 100 hours of being a prospector are totally different. Sure there is a skill tree, but the actual trial and error experience also makes a difference. For a MMO game that is supposed to be played for hundreds of hours, anything not challenging quickly becomes a chore. We want to prevent that.   Now, about mining: it will be done via your Nanoformer. The harder the material and the larger the volume collected, the longer it will take. We have chosen an energy-based model where each material is capable of absorbing a certain level of energy before being “mined”. So, you will be able to upgrade your Nanoformer energy throughput to improve your mining as well as various mining skills. For more advanced mining, and possibly some rare materials, dedicated tools will enter the scene, but this might not be available at release, but rather in a future expansion. We are considering the possibility of Mining Units inside your constructs, but this will be in an expansion after release and it will require some careful balancing to make sure standard mining is still an option, in particular for beginners.   Interestingly, we imagine that the “profession” of prospector/scanner and the “profession” of miner could very well be separate. Some people will specialize in finding large veins of important materials (and possibly sell the intel about the location), while some others will specialize in mining it, focusing on a mining site for several weeks or months. When you exploit a deep vein, you will need to install things like lifts, vehicles, containers, and clean wide shafts to ease material and dirt evacuation. Maybe even factories close to the vein to transform the ore into pure material. This differs from most other games where scanning and mining are usually very similar and the activity of mining and scanning alternate frequently as you jump from one asteroid to another, or one mining spot to the other.   We hope you enjoyed this short intro and, as usual, we are very excited to hear your feedback and ideas! We are developing this at the moment, so it’s a good time for the community to share your thoughts and influence what is going on!     JC Baillie, Project Lead.

One of those will be industrial and same as in real world, you will see huge craters from stuff that was mined/harvested out. It's ok. Many areas will transform into wasteland, but many things will be built on top of it and there will also be areas terraformed into something beautiful. People will create those landmarks, cities, whatever.

And it will also help the economy. Once the materials are harvested, companies will have to relocate to build another bases and continue the harvesting. And they can sell the old bases cheaply or keep them for any other purpose:-)

Hi everyone!   @ghoster:   Despite how you might feel, we are not going in radio silence mode.   A few points that we want to clarify here:   - We never expected either to have a success as large as Star Citizen for many obvious reasons: we started to really communicate about the game a few months ago, we had no celebrity in our team and no big brand to put in front. That alone were legitimate reasons to keep our expectations realistic. We are already amazed to see how far we went in a such short amount of time and we are not going to stop there! - As Pang_Dread mentioned it, we communicated in the last Kickstarter update that the communication now won't be as intense as it was during the Kickstarter.  - A few things are coming soon:
    1) new forum sections will be opened on Wednesday 2nd of November 2) a newsletter for the end of the week (with some stuff that might interest more than one ) 3) a fan fiction contest that will take place from Tuesday 15th November to Thursday 15th of December! (more info very soon!)   @Anonymous:   We can understand that you are concerned about our current lack of presence. However, you should understand in return that you can't expect the same presence from a Community Manager in a big company or being a part of a big structure than one in a small company. Why? Because in small companies (like indie studios), people are generally brought to do more than the exact job written on their contract. If not, then the company might quickly run into some problems to work properly.    Just a few examples: - Apart the communication from JC, all the comm from the devs is handled by the CMs (who are doing the link between devs and the community). - Managing discussions on Facebook and Twitter is totally within the job of the CMs (it's really disturbing to say the contrary). - This might be shocking but yes, Customer Support can be something a CM has to do (and right now, this is also part of our job). - Internal, invisible tasks related to Kickstarter and hugely time consuming are also among the things we currently have to do. - Despite what you're saying, Reddit can also be an appropriate place where a CM might have to interact with people interested in the game.   All in all, we would love to interact a lot more with you guys than what we are currently doing. We will do our best to increase our presence in the coming months. A few replies are coming soon to some important topics.   Best regards, Nyzaltar.

As Shynras (and previously JC) said, the game will be easy to learn, hard to master. From pre-alpha videos it seems to be easy enough for anyone. Actually, building tools look already nice and with some improvements they have on the roadmap it will be really easy to start playing.

Now, the second part. While Twerk is right about the technical informations, I must agree that some players are overthinking it and posting various ideas. And tons of them are simply wrong (during development you have to filter thousands of bad ideas to get few good ones). But don't worry, the devs have clear vision and they are making logical decisions WHEN they are needed.
