Hunter reacted to Captain Jack in Realistic incentives for City building
What is clear from last weekends city build is that there are people playing the game that enjoy the social aspect that cities provide. It is also clear that cities need planning, a government, law enforcement, garbage collection, entertainment, among a host of other things. All those "things" give players something to do. Some of it is sims in space, but some people like that kind of thing. If DU can get those kinds of people playing the same game as the space marines and quanta miners... it'd be the holy grail.

DU doesn't need reasons to build cities because people want to build cities. What DU needs are mechanics that cater to those people. It was touched on earlier, but in-game communications, yes I know discord, but in-game chat, especially localized, gets people closer together, it's social. Emotes, completely unnecessary, but again social. Trading, bartering, buying, selling, directly between in-game avatars, with goods and services that can't be magically obtained from terminals or email. There are players wanting to engage in those activities, just as there are players wanting to fly around and blow things up. I think there is room in the universe for both.

i had a funny feeling i would regret involvement with this topic.  it really does bring out some very strong opinions and emotions which is understandable but I don't recall anyone being attacked.  I think I'm the newest person here and I certainly don't know how things should work, but I do enjoy reading (and sometimes taking part in the discussions) regarding the early evolution of this project.  There's a lot of knowledgeable and experienced ppl in here (much more than myself) and its interesting to see all the different viewpoints.

i'll elaborate on a couple things then i'll excuse myself from this topic forever more.  How do you justify DAC's existence if you want full emergent gameplay?  You don't.  We are discussing how we deal with DAC's being in the game (as a done deal) and how it should be handled.  That is a decision by NQ, for better or worse.  I would like to think that no one associated with this forum would be using the DAC shortcomings for stealing.  Maybe there are scumbags among us but personally I have had a very positive experience with everyone I've met in here so far, but here was the point regarding a lootable DAC:  No one wants to take anyone's lunch money so they cannot play DU next month.  Jeez, at least I hope not.

Buy your DAC, put it safely away (NQ needs to ensure this is possible), and use the dam thing to cover your monthly fee.  End of Story right?   However....  if you are going to use the DAC for another purpose (actually I can think of many) such as transporting a bunch of it somewhere so you can make a huge profit with another corporation or player... then yes, imo it's fair game.

I hope that no one gets too stressed or assumes the worst regarding gameplay ideas and opinions.  If so, then I will bet that was not the intent.  Have a good evening everyone.

    I like it, thanks BlorgonSlayer!

My main motivation is, of course, personal play preference.  I want to play when I want to play, for as little or long as I wish, whatever time of the day I wish, without obligations to others to do what they want.  Now the market may define my actions, but that is because I want to maximize my personal profit for what I deem reasonable risk - not because some VP tells me to.  I spent close to 40 years in corporate America - not about to go back into a simulation of that.

All that said, an organization of freelance players, who help each other if and only if they feel like it, might fit my style.

Pat answer - because you'll kick yourself if it works and you didn't get on board

Real answer from an "investor" perspective:

Essentially what you are backing is a startup PaaS company with a patented DB tech which makes problems like >C10K look trivial in terms of how it handles concurrency, ACID and other such things.

NQ doesn't do content, levels etc - they are building a sandbox which the players then create in - it's a PaaS model. So beyond the kickstart and the game itself, if we get NQ off the ground, the power of the NovaQuark game engine and DB tech will able to be monetized moving forwards - it really can change the entire face of the gaming industry, not to mention potentially applications in other industries requiring high performance/availability/concurrency solutions.

The team itself are industry veterans - not necessarily the gaming industry, as specialists in their chosen fields - they just all happen to be gamers as well. Additionally, NQ's advisers include the likes of Theo Priestly (http://www.forbes.com/sites/theopriestley/#1279282a5a4d, http://www.theinternetofthings.eu/theo-priestley et. al).

And that to me is the selling point of NQ over other investment opportunities (and yes, I do consider Kickstarter to be an investment model) - it is a solid PaaS businesses who have identified a niche which hasn't been filled or innovated on in years, and they are building technology and languages to meet that need, rather than being a group of simply passionate game devs with little to no business experience, especially in running a cloud based operation.

Key takeaway - for games like WoW or Runescape (10-12 million monthly players) - imagine that potentially on ONE instance/"server" - these guys can do it.

I think it's too much of a gamble to release without any form of combat.  I think they will have something, even if it's crude.  It will be a hell of a challenge though but I think this company is up to it.  The saving grace is that DU does so many other things too.   I'll admit a space game without space combat does sound kind of strange.  O.o

Hey Anon,  you are a good friend and I enjoy our discussions in public and pm's regarding our gaming history and DU.   I have a hard time believing that anyone within the DU community is hell bent on personally attacking someone based on their ethnicity, color, creed or whatever.  It's so easy for chats to get quickly out of hand and I am of the opinion that no one is that vile unless completely proven otherwise.  I did not read the entire exchange of what was said on Discord but I'll wager that the things said were not directed at you personally but it really bothered you a lot and I'm sorry that happened for you.  This is supposed to be a fun place to come and discuss our mutual interest in DU.   Did the conversation end with,   <jeez, I'm sorry if you got offended, that wasen't my intent?>   If not, then maybe it should have, because it show's a mutual respect and concern and this could have been buried post haste.

Your Bill of Rights is an amazing document.  If I ever need to have one drafted (or a contract drawn up) for my private island of inhabitants of misfits and lowlifes (lol), you will be my author.  There's nothing wrong inherently with your post content.  I do feel however that the majority is covered already via ToS, Eula, etc. and hopefully common sense and respect.   I  also have a low tolerance for racism, bigotry.   I would rapidly move on.  We have lots to discuss and organize regarding this great game that we want to see materialize.

@Lethys: We are on the same page...
I, LETHYS, will track the goal of harassing, griefing and mocking around with players in-game on a more or less friendly basis where no fucks are given. I will never mock them because of their race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. If offered a chance, I will have slaves, burn down cities and kill people as I see fit.

At first I thought this was some post about the general respect and manners people should behave on discord / forum, but then I read that you meant DU with that.
You need admins there (and in DU) who ban inappropriate language and harassments. Some people really overshoot the thin line between in-game mocking, griefing and a real, true harassment. I mock people for fun in-game, grief them and have fun with them - but all IN character because I'm a pirate. This should be endorsed by the EULA, because it adds metagame. I can't stand people though who get personal. Like you know, memes/harassments about the government in Germany from 1940. Living in Austria where such statements are banned and under strict prosecution, I think those should also be banned in-game because, surprise surprise, it's a game.

    So here we go:

I, LETHYS, will track the goal of harassing, griefing and mocking around with players in-game on a more or less friendly basis where no fucks are given. I will never mock them because of their race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. @Semproser...  they in fact did build a ship from scratch and flew it.  I totally get your caution.  We been burned so many times.  Personally, I think they should have had more to show us before the KS.  I do agree with you on that.  However...  maybe it's the gambler in me... or the sucker in me but the team is incredibly talented, coming from strong positions in business and technology.  It's enough of a hedge for me that says the odds are fairly good this will materialize.   MMO's are never a sure thing but the force is strong with this one I feel.

If enough people get their hands on a working demo and without being bribed still think that NQ can deliver on what they've said, and haven't bigged up their claims, then that's the perfect scenario. Everyone wins. Scott Manley is just a good example of a member of the gaming community that would want this to succeed and I would trust to give an insightful and unbiased opinion on what the game is like after a hands on experience <-- that's what I want.

Firstly i want to link to the thread where i got this idea as it could go hand in hand with this system or simply be a stand alone system that replaces this system I thought it deserved it's own thread for discussion.

Yes it looks like a wall of text so I have bullet pointed it for you

    Link

    I would like to see in the game a reputation system allow me to explain 2 versions of this;

    +1/-1 System
Player accepts job, Player completes job, Contractor +1 for player
    Advantages
Simple, Easy to implement, Higher rep means more likely to get employment on bigger jobs, Lower rep may represent a noob that you may not want to employ Negative rep may represent a scammer, or a lazy half job Disadvantages
Easily abused Employers cannot see the scale of jobs that this player was involved with

    Curriculum Vitae

This system requires some features being discussed in the other thread to work and would mean employers can see previous jobs that the player had been involved with and successfully or unsuccessfully completed. It could also include the +1/-1 system but employers again would be able to see if their score is legitimate or not.

    Advantages
Higher rep means more likely to get employment on bigger jobs, Lower rep may represent a noob that you may not want to employ Negative rep may represent a scammer, or a lazy half job Less open to abuse as players can assess if the rep is genuine or not Previous employers could add comments on their performance and timekeeping Employers can see what kind of jobs the player has been doing Disadvantages
Can still be abused but would require extra work to abuse it. Would potentially significantly slow down game play due to employers reviewing past histories

Cinderfall will be actively working to secure a spot for Emberstone which will be open to everyone unless they start causing a lot of problems like killing people in the streets or attacking buildings, then you'll get marked temporarily to be murdered by the security or any active forces.

What you're all bringing up is the basic lack of a fabric of society. That's precisely what csyn hopes to achieve. Well be actively helping noobies even if they go and join orgs which don't back the csyn mission to bring civilization to a lawless universe. As far as conflict, if we remain large or maintain considerable influence well lay down protective measures to guide beginners into the game.

If anyone builds around the ark field to try and hamper the newer people there's gonna be conflict. If Cinderfall and the syndicated members and any other friends build defences Around the field it'll probably be to keep the salty vets away.

If this is something that concerns you consider jumping into the csyn discord. If protecting organisations and player rights sounds good, we can solve more problems together than worrying about them divided

I just got back from the event held in Paris at Novaquark offices. I had to leave a little early, but still, this was quite an awesome evening.

I'd like to thank all the team members at novaquark for hosting this event, you guys rock !
Quick run down of events for those who didn't attend:

    - Introduction to the dev build we would lay our hands upon a few minutes later by the man himself: JC Baillie
    - Fool around with the dev build previously showcased in NQ videos with some members of the dev team to help us out when needed
    - QA session with JC again
    - Little drink with the rest of the team and attendees

    Where do I start ?

First, we met very dedicated and enthusiastic people at NQ. At no point did I feel I've been fed some PR bull*hit, or that the enthusiasm or willingness from dev to talk about their game was faked.
These guys really want to push themselves to deliver the best possible experience with this project, that's for sure.

I viewed JC as a strong leader, with a clear vision for the game, an acute knowledge of the challenges ahead and how to overcome them. From what we've seen from the team, my guess is that this project is in pretty good hands.

As expected from a dev build, the control scheme and performance were not ideal, but it ran perfectly. The nice thing is that the game ran on a server, meaning that we had 5 computers running at the same time with people fooling around.
I gotta say, seeing people zooming by in a newly built ship (the first one was built within a couple of minutes), or vandalizing editing those already placed by the devs was really cool.

There was a lot to cover during the QA session and little time to answer all the questions, but the community managers who waited for us with the drinks were kind enough to answer all of the remaining questions. Thanks for your golden patience and, again, enthusiasm guys !

I'm glad I was able to attend and meet the people behind the project, it really gives another meaning to my backing on KS.

Anyways, thanks again guys, and all the best for the things to come !

Yea... I think they do.  They created the DAC.  In effect, they created a commodity for the game.  In fact, they labeled it a 'Dual Access Coupon' commodity.  It was not created just for a coupon game time ticket.  I had to think about this today after taking a very small part in the DAC debate via Discord.  Initially, I was very much against having this item lootable if acquired from the KS but there's no difference between purchasing the DAC via KS or doing an advance purchase or whatever method.  A purchase is a purchase.

I think it should be a fully lootable item and one that can be destroyed.   When there is little to be lost, people don't care.  We see this over and over in other games where actions have no consequences.  Would you be driving through a really bad neighborhood in your shitty Jeep that has no working tail lights and have a paper bag of 20k sitting next to you?  As long as there is a way to safely store the item...   If I want to take a chance and transport a cargo of DAC's with the possibility of losing it, well give me the freedom to make that decision.

There will be other features that will come up on our radar that we won't agree with or will think that NQ has lost their minds over.  We have a responsibility to give the company feedback and tell them if we are not in agreement with a game feature.   If it makes sense and the feedback is vocal enough, they will listen because they don't have to answer to a big publisher and so far this company has demonstrated an open door policy to fan based feed back.

    @yamamushi I hear you.

In defence of @GalloInfligo - I read his use of the word "scum bags" not as muck slinging in the debate, but rather, a term referring to real life, out of play people who are seeking to literally steal what is effectively real money.

If that's not the context in which he meant it - well - then @GalloInfligo - I must disagree - there must be a means or mechanic (community driven or otherwise) that allows for "friendly" in-game "redistribution of wealth" (piracy/covert ops between corps/outlaws etc), but in no way makes things a simple gank-fest (sorry Twerk n co) - there has to be risk on both sides, and reward, and more importantly, a feeling that even if one side or another loses, that the experience was FUN and not something that will make players rage-quit, or otherwise constitute RL actions which anywhere else would be considered pure cyber-bullying or predatory activity.

    As you were.
