You should have side that the Login NAME is case sensitive.  I was originally trying "jdsplice" and "JDsplice" worked.  Strange requirement.  My bank does not even require that level of security.

Oh dear. Banks user names should really be case sensitive ;)

    Glad this solved your issue.

So if DAC is more expensive than sub price, why would anyone buy it IRL in the first place?  This doesn't make sense to me.

This is by design as DAC are meant for people that want to trade the DACs for quanta (ingame currency) inside the game and not to replace a direct subscription purchase.

    Edit: ninja'd :/

  3. Suddenly the internet does what it does best and spewed forth another theoretical means of space travel:

Not only does it solve the gravity issue during space travel but also can reach anywhere in the known universe within a human lifetime.

(The only slight niggle, a tiny flaw, is that you need vast quantities of fuel to do so. But let's ignore that for now.)

So let's look at the Novarks journey: It took the Novark near on 10000 earth years to reach its destination (let's say 9967ish)

So we take the space travel calculator outlined in the above video and plug in (9967 / 2) 4983.5 years in the place that used to be earth.

Why half you ask? Because this is half the equation: accelerate to near light speed and at halfway point start decelerating. Take any answers and multiply by 2 and we have the full trip.

From this a few interesting things crop up:

    1. It takes around 33 years to travel to Alioth. At least it seems that way for those onboard the Novark if they were awake. Cryopods would be useful for saving food, but a human (provided they had enough sustenance) would easy live long enough to see the end of this journey in a comfortable 1G.
    2. The distance traveled is around 3 kpc (kilo-parsecs). Around 9963 light years.

Why is the second point interesting? We know the Novark headed off vaguely towards the Scutum-Centaurus arm of the Milky Way Galaxy.

    o-galaxy.jpg

The closest point of the arm is towards the center of the galaxy. So like no man before us we head in that direction. And if we look for a point of interest in that direction at around 3 kpc we find a globular cluster of stars known as Messier 22 (M22)

Alioth could be somewhere in there...

Or not. Space is very big after all.

At least now we know that the trick to near light speed travel is a very efficient fuel source.

P.S. A similar observation as far as distance goes was observed here:

Though my solution was by far the messier.

  4. Eventhough there has been no alpha yet, organizations are still continuing with their schenanigans.

The first  post has been updated with Dual Universe State of Affairs - Pre-alpha (part 2), detailing a bit more than just the Top 20 organisations. I hope some find it enlightening ;)

Again, thanks to all that helped make this happen.

If you feel your organisation is under-represented, feel free to drop me a PM.

  5. Gambling games, games of chance, slot machines, even in-game games of skill. All these can (and should) be created by players.

The role of DICE is a gaming commission to ensure that these games are safe for both the player and the house. This includes, among others, that the house has a fair payout and that a player can't walk away with all the quanta without playing the game as intended.

If anyone has any more questions or suggestions, feel free to drop me a DM or join the DICE discord.

  6. The winning entry by judge decision is:

    Flipmaze by Ben Fargo

The submission are in and it's time to vote on the first DICE Den for an in-game arena game

Voting closes after the 10 March 2018, so be sure to cast your vote before then.

Still unsure who to vote for? Go have a look through their entries:

Edit : Due to the 3-way tie, the final decision now rests in the hands of our capable panel of judges.

Edit: The winning entry is Flipmaze by Ben Fargo

  7. This is an interesting idea. Though it is not entirely clear what the benefits are for being registered. Advertising? If so where? (besides here). How is this different than for the company (organisation) to make its own advertising post. Will these be tallied and put in a handy webpage or app somewhere?

This is not to disparage the idea. These kind of initiatives should be encouraged, but a little more clarification to the intent behind the registry would be nice. :)

  8. Communication in a MMO

Communication is important. To make deals, or just to flip off your opponent.

    yellow-talk.ico

The classic global text chat has been used extensively as a means of communication, though as MMO's become more complex and immersive, the means of communication necessarily also changes.

As example Ultima Online had text hovering over the players avatar with no distracting bubble. In a large open world, local discussions just made logical sense.

But communication is not only limited to text. Some examples include The Endless Forest, where communication is done through emotes and symbols, and Journey, where players use visual cues to signal intent. The older Battlefield games relied heavily on "Context Menu" communication and in-game sound to communicate. Communicating with sounds and UI elements is much more efficient than the in-game text chat functions.

Voice (VoIP) is the next logical step (discussed here), but voice suffers from a large disadvantage: not everyone speaks the same language and even then not with the same proficiency.

Emotes (discussed here) are universal, but even with an extensive emote library, it is difficult to conduct a meaningful conversation.

    Discussion

Does DU need a (simple) universal language? Should it be created by NQ or the players?

As an alternative, how about a library of emotes which extend beyond the usual "sit" and "flip off" that could convey concepts like "deal" or "no deal"?

Or do you think global text chat with a 3rd party voice app is sufficient?

Judging from the latest AMA, I believe it is too soon to tell.
