Novean-119644 got a reaction from Sundown in INSIDE NOVAQUARK: DEMETER EDITION - Discussion Thread
    1. Current idea of absolute random ore pools and sniping good tiles and not allowing latecomers to get good tiles is just absolute trash. Who though its a good idea? I would like t have a chat with the person from NQ responsible for this stupid idea.
Is it that hard to give similar pools to everyone? Why don't you give for example 1000L of ore on every tile and only randomize the quantity of specific ores.

For example on Alioth every tile have 1000L/h ore and then, every tile have 700L/h of t1, 200L/h of t2 and 100L/h of t3.
And then randomise the quantity of specific ore, 300l bauxit, 200 quartz, 100 hematite, 100 coal ect
So every tile will have similar potential and only the balance of ore mixed.

This is just an example, but making people who already own a tiles to switch for sniped tiles is stupid idea, you can do better than this.
You also shouldn't discriminate newcomers who will be left with leftovers for the rest of theyr life just because you made some stupid ideas.

    2. Taxes idea is stupid. Why does every tile need separate wallet? It's just a mini game i don't wanna play. Can't they drain from my main wallet automatically?
Also amount of tax is ridiculous. You force on players selling stuff or ore just to pay for tile.
Every developer decision that force something on any player is fundamentally a bad decision.
We came here to have fun and not to be forced to play the game in order to pay some stupid taxes.

    3. If you plan to change the way air brakes works, you have to boost them a lot.
Every ship i own which was designed by other voxelmancer, does not have a place for additional airbrake outside.
If this game is about voxels and attracting new players with nice looking ships, how the hell stacking 500 bad looking elements is going to help us building nice ship? There is already tooooooooooo many stupid elements that have to be outside and we end up making 1000 holes on outer layer of ship to make elements work.
Retro brakes/air brakes/wings or any air lift elements should work despite being covered with voxels if you don't want to limit our creativity.
It would be ok if you would allow us to modify dimensions and shape of elements so we can make an actual good looking elements on ship instead of ugly acne on ships.
Why there are always such a bad decisions coming from Nq?

Are you guys doing such a bad decisions on purpose so the player-base focus on those issues instead of slow progress of development?

I'm very grateful that you finally decided to add auto-miners, but considering the trust you lost on player base, the main reason behind miners is infrastructure cost and not the players opinion or respect of our time.

Hey there, here's my humble opinion on the upcoming Demeter patch.

I'm a fan of constructive feedback, and I don't say the following lightly. While I really respect each and every staff member of NQ, and their efforts of bearing the brunt on a daily base, and while there are also things I am really looking forward with the upcoming patch (and while some in here will even disagree with my personal opinion) ... I am not in principle against changes (on the contrary). But I am, like many others, very concerned for the future of DU - and that even before the official release. To say this as respectful as possible in regards to all your hard work at NQ: the upcoming changes are a sign of destruction, and DU may disappear into oblivion in early 2022.

    (1) The terrain reset is necessary, yes. And I assume the majority of the player base is absolutely okay with that, considering the issues we've experienced since Beta start. Nobody cares, if they have to dig out their stuff again - it might be a great opportunity to redo some stuff around bases, that people were not really happy about in the first place. Same with those changes on how brakes work. Personally, I like the way they work on PTS now.

    (2) The voxel changes are fine too. Technology is changing and evolving, so does the voxel tech. What I'm concerned of are the complexity limitations. While technical issues need to be prevented in the first place, I fear many detailed designs will no longer feasible in near future. DU will no longer be the game where everything is possible, and the own creativity is the limit - instead it will be the game where everything is possible within those complexity limitations. Please, don't cut the rope too short there.

    (3) And now, let me point out my concerns for mining changes, scan results, and territory taxation: This could kill many huge community projects within the first one or two months. And while projects like the Alioth Spaceport by Infinity Corporation, Shamsie's Bazaar, and Obsidian Racing may be safe for now, many others will just disappear. Smaller groups or ambitious solo content creators won't be able to grind for millions and millions of quanta without spending the time of a full-time job each day, seven days a week, just to earn enough money from missions to pay their taxes on tiles they need for their project.

And if that's not enough, you would split the community even more by keeping existing scan results valuable. Both new and casual players won't be able to acquire enough resources by mining, and huge organisations with fully scanned planetary bodies are going to take each and every valuable tile for mining without any efforts and/or competition (within days, or even hours), because they already have containers full of planet-wide scan results.

I like the idea of having two different kinds of territory units, some people have already mentioned in other threads (e.g. in Hagbard's feedback thread): those, we already got - to just build and terraform. And mining territory units, with tax rates of those you plan to implement in Demeter. Plus, I'd prefer a full reset of all scan results - and I may not be alone with that wish.

    Conclusion
The way you are going to implement all those changes +  territory taxation, many players will leave before Christmas (déjá vu), and many projects (race tracks, community projects, and other ambitious projects) will just disappear before the game has even been released. The players' base will shrink, and even PvP will suffer from those changes. To be precise, you break the neck of many content creators, that create amazing stuff for you and for all (existing + future) players. And when that happens, Dual Universe as we know and love it - a game that I, like many others, have waited for a long time, that I've followed since the first Facebook ad that NQ-Nomad has dropped, and that many of us value for the freedom of creativity and the great community within - will vanish.

Please, NQ, I ask you from the bottom of my heart, and even as an early backer of Dual Universe: overthink those changes you are planning to implement with the upcoming Demeter patch. I don't want our all concerns become a nightmare before Christmas (no pun intended!). We don't want a "Eve Online" 2.0 economic simulation - we want to play Dual Universe, a "continuous single-shard sandbox MMORPG taking place in a vast fully editable Sci-Fi universe".

Do not let those changes be Hades, do not let DU become Persephone ...

    Fixed those for you.

Sure, I'm not speaking for so-called veterans. I'm speaking for myself, my org, my org-mates, and all of the former org-mates that quit when 0.23 dropped.

Since then, they 'fixed' the price of schematics from their horrifically flawed introductory price scheme, then broke them for 2 hours, then fixed them again. They added missions, which devalued currency to almost meaningless, while adding PvP content at the same time. They added asteroids, which provided PvP content for a portion of the server, and provided PvP victims for another portion. And now they're adding automated miners so we can finally stop playing dig-dug, except on asteroids with too-small nodes.

The game has gotten better since 0.23, but as I said, my friends won't be back. So I want their stuff. It's really that simple. And I'll be able to get it, if I'm there first.

Novean-119644 reacted to Hagbard in Call for Demeter-related questions
i just opened another thread just before this Q/A was created...
Ok, usually i am not negative but the balance of Demeter on the PTS server has some severe problems.

    1. Territory costs of 1m per week:
this will lead to almost nobody claiming any tiles any more outside of the sanc moon unless the territory can produce some serious income. so all "player made content" will disappear after some time

    2. Scanning results do not get deleted and show l/h for mining units
this will lead to ALL really valuable tiles being claimed within the first 24h after demeter goes live, as it is really easy to identify  the most powerful tiles for mining units if you have containers full with scanner results.
so after day 1, the fun is over and the "mega tiles" will be claimed by those players/orgs that have all the existing scans.

NQ, as demeter is balanced on the PTS, it would kill the game if it goes to the live server

    - New players some days later would not have a chance to find income opportunities despite missions.
    - earning quanta will be a lot harder, so people would stop spending.. this would kill industrialists workflow.
    - the imbalance between experienced players/orgs and new players would get worse and even more players would demand a wipe or simply not enjoy the game

    please reconsider your decisions.

Can't remember, but I'll take your word for it

The difference is in Elite dangerous, it's not that dangerous. You can quickly gain money with little risk. First doing trading, then doing exploring or mining. You can play completely in a non PvP group or solo if you wish. You aren't running out and grabbing territory which once you have you get to keep and everybody who joins latter has to travel further further to get the same benefits if they can find them at all.

Missions and Mining seemed to be the main way for noobs to make money in DU, and now you are taking away the ability to grind the mining to get ahead.

You can't compete in industry for ages as you are competing with people with a huge talent head start and probably better supply lines.

You can't compete with mining as there are hardly any safe zone asteroids and it takes awhile before you have the skills and resources to try and poach from the others.

You can't compete in trade (like ED) as people in the market are more talented.

It's going to make the new user experience feel slower and more unfair, or have people pressured into orgs to follow directions/orders in the hope for scraps handed down from the elite.

No I don't have a solution, just concerns.

There's like five people who got rich from exploits.  A wipe would make a very vocal minority (of the already limited number of people who still play) happy, and the rest would leave.  It's basically a big middle finger to everyone who has put in the time and effort since the beginning of beta to build wealth.  Doing a quanta-only wipe would be even worse.  I've made money by selling ships.  If you wipe the quanta but let them keep the ships, they they basically got them for free, and I (and every other ship seller) gets screwed.

"How could they possibly know server costs would be this high? That people would use the tools to mine...?"

Anyone that's ever played an MMO would know...NQ was supposedly "shocked" at how quickly players made it to space, too. It's like they never bothered to play an MMO and vastly underestimated their players.

You know how we know that NQ never really understood how the game would scale....? Because they thought they could make a single shard game but didn't invent anything special to handle the idea of a ton of people occupying one area. The "proof" they made with bots running around was pretty laughable to anyone that understands benchmarking.

You don't get credit for innovation if the thing you "innovate" doesn't work and the reason no one else has done it....is because it doesn't work.

Besides that, it's hard to say that DU is "innovative" running on an off-the-shelf engine and off-the-shelf servers -- that really matters, because it shows how they can't optimize low-level details for either the engine or server infrastructure. Even without mining, will the game really scale...? We'll see.

Besides, what exactly is so innovative about either their design or tech? It's a very good building sandbox with a crappy combat model strapped on...and a vague promise of more. I agree that the game they pitched in their adverts is innovative as all hell, but that's not what DU is today.

If the game does get popular, you can be sure that Demeter won't be the last design change driven by scale and cost.

It's time I show my appreciation as well.
I felt like you guys had a big weigh on shoulders deciding on removing the active mining from planets. DON'T BE SORRY!
Most of players who actually achieved something in this game are sick and tired of earthworm mechanic and i'm personally incredibly happy for this update!! Those who want hand mine, still can and will on asteroid!
SO just give us more asteroids and problem solved.
Thank you so much for the auto-miners.
I'm personally against this sniping tile mechanic. I just hope that this buff for having multiple tiles next to each other will compensate for the sniping of best tiles.
I also hope that tiles will be rather balanced so people who joined later will not be forced to live in shadow of those who sniped best tiles.

Members of the Dual Universe dev team joined forces to talk about Dual Universe’s next update, Demeter, which focuses primarily around mining.

    In this vlog, you’ll meet:
NQ-Sesch, General Manager of Novaquark-Montreal NQ-Kyrios, Creative Director NQ-Entropy, Game Designer NQ-Sirg, Technical Director NQ-Deckard, Live Ops Specialist
    Topics include:
How we're implementing a new voxel grid on planets called hexoctrees, which will significantly decrease database costs and improve performance for players. The fundamental changes to mining, including the removal of underground ore, how mining units work and how their efficiency can be optimized. How the management of territories is impacted with the introduction of monthly ownership fees among other changes. How these changes include a reset of the planets’ geometry and the potential impact on some players with underground bases. How Novaquark is trying to help such players ahead of the launch of Demeter.
To allow players the opportunity to see and experience these changes first-hand, including the effects of the geometry reset on their constructs, the public test server will be available soon with a preview of Demeter. The PTS will host a fresh copy of the database from Live so that all of your inventory and constructs will be waiting for you there .

We highly encourage DU community members to watch the vlog and join us on PTS to try all the things. Questions or comments about the vlog? We have the perfect place for those on our forum.

Novean-119644 reacted to NQ-Deckard in DETECTING STACKED ELEMENTS AVAILABLE SOON
With production on the Demeter update well underway, we wanted to make you aware of one of the big changes that will be included in the release, the Stacked Element Detection function.

Previously, it was possible (though not permissible) to stack elements while creating ships. We’ve since eliminated the means to do this; however, there could still be players who are unknowingly piloting purchased ships that contain stacked elements. Used in tandem with the in-game build helper, we will now provide a way to identify stacked elements on constructs so that the owner can remove them.

You may now find that some elements listed have a red triangle in front of them, indicating a stacked element and/or an element that is overlapping another element.

The following elements* are currently subject to disabling:
Repair units Shield generators Weapons Elevators Anti-gravity generators Anti-gravity pulsors Containers Industries Mining units Airfoils (wings, stabilizers, and ailerons) Space and air brakes Adjustors Engines (atmospheric, space, rocket, hover, and vertical boosters) Control units (including PvP seats) Deep space asteroid trackers Resurrection nodes Surrogate pods and VR stations Territory scanners *List subject to change

Please note that this is a temporary method to address the issues caused by stacked elements. An automated process will be introduced in a future update in which any stacked or overlapping element will have its function disabled. We highly recommend that all players use this to retrofit, redesign, or unstack any stacked elements to ensure retention of functionality once the final phase of the stacking fixes is implemented.

    So it's coming.

I don't like the idea and it's a perfect way of making sure that players that took break, won't come back ever.
One of coolest developers Naoki Yoshida, often tell it's player base, that he want them to enjoy the game, and if they feel burned up, just stop subscription and stop playing. Come back later when you feel like it.
Everyone loves him and that's very mature and incredible way of thinking.

Thank you. The current safe zone is great in terms of size and in relation to the PvP zone. So you have the freedom to play the game the way you like it. I really hope that nothing will be changed about the current size.
At this point, however, I would ask that as soon as the universe is expanded with more solar systems, there will also be more safe zones. I would be very much in favour of finding "hidden" safe zones throughout the universe, sometimes a lunar area or a planet or simply a larger area in space to set up a distant space base. "Hidden" because these are not displayed on the map, but players can fly through PvP space by chance and discover such "islands of safety".

Yes i'm sure so many pilots went to asteroids for pvp(and not ore) and just by coincidence they forgot to put their guns.
And of course merciless Legion decided to liberate us of our pvp (non gunned ships), because we lack skills and experience in pvp.
And it has nothing to do with the fact that pvp is just bad and boring and there is very few people actually interested in pvp apart from grievers.

Let me tell you story of 90% of players which you absolutely don't get because of your limited mindset or absolute ignorance.
There are good pvp games out there and those interested in pvp, go to the game where you can showcase your skill and not the depth of your purse, be it IG or real life wallet.
And DU is not one of them as it lack fundamental mechanic to provide meaningful and demanding pvp.
Vast majority of players come to DU because of *caugh caugh* suprise! it's a building game with ability to build almost any ship or building.
Entire game is build around voxels and NQ decided to add incredibly boring mechanic of procuring ores.
Then they added pvp which works like some very sloppy iterations of eve online without consideration and knowledge how it actually works.

And i can assure you most players don't give a crap about the pvp in this game because it suck terribly in the first place.
But then we have people like you or bored people and those who can't do a competitive pvp so they pretend they are good at pvp and just grieve on non-pvp players in games like DU.
If you think, skill have anything to do in DU version of pvp you are very very very sad and misguided soul.
Yes it require skill, but only in matter of how to operate the mechanic, there is no reward for doing it better or any way intelligent way.
it's just lock and shoot and occasional reload. Enemy have no way to escape you, no way to detect you, no way of fighting you.
The whole idea is just boring and i'm surprised that legion players actually still do it which clearly indicate you are not here for pvp, you are here to grieve people, put the salt into the would and brag about your incredibly sophisticated kills.

Truth is almost no1 is interested in PVP and most of people just don't want to even deal with it.
Yes we can band together and fight you, but there is no incentive towards it.
It's building game not pvp game, there is no reward for us for killing you.
You will just get a new ship and come again.
This is why we complain because we just don't want it, and we don't want to fight you bcs it's boring.
Even if i kill you what will it give me? Some broken elements and empty cargo?
15 minutes later there will be another legion ship and i will just waste my life on meaningless and boring activity of killing one mosquito.

    What you mean by increase?

current meta pvp l core ship is worth 300m in cheapest variant, some are worth over 600m.
Are you out of your mind?

I think NQ plans and already announced that.

Normal human person need to take a break from the game, especially as toxic as DU.
Punishing us with loosing every construct is a clear middle finger from NQ.
