  1. I'm not sugar coating anything. And you don't know me well enough to make any assumptions about me or my playstyles. FFA PVP is at the core, but that doesn't mean everyone is out to get you. NQ created the safezone for a reason. Perhaps it could be they know DU will attract all sorts of people, not only PK's. Nobody can predict the future so I file this under, we will see.
  2. That's not quite true. It's more accurate to say that PvP encounters are to be expected. I don't feel forced to go out looking for a fight, but when I'm out mining it might happen. And PVP means more than combat. Any form of competition in a FFA sandbox can be seen as PvP.
  3. I don't like to sweep so many people together in one sentence but in essence I agree. Although at some point you need to draw a line. Or you loose the essence of your game. DU needs all sorts of players to be healthy. It needs the pirates and the builders. Can't we all just get along?
  4. Quite honestly I love the player to player trade. Talking about prices, showing no shame when you ask for the skin on their nose. Markets have their use but I prefer the real time trading. Always a chance you are greeted with a pistol. Nothing beats a good deal.
  5. Talks about intelligence, then posts in wrong section. Is this what they call irony?
  6. We can only hope. PVE for crafting weapons, armor, fashion etc. would be a perfect fit for DU. I still want my trenchcoat and cowboy hat. I'm scared to watch firefly, I'll watch it and then get upset because it got canceled, like TOS.
  7. True... but once more I choose optimism and hope for the best. Hehe, I think we all have our own ideas about what EVE's problem is. But the freedom aspect is something I often discuss with my younger brother. Me personally can't stand to kill 10 rats, ever again. And because I can't multi quote, I just want to say equeting a players actions in game to a person's real life mentality is stupid. There is always the exception of course.
  8. Quite right Twerk. Toxic might not be the best choice of words. It is subjective as you say. Let me try to rephrase that as, I want DU to be welcoming to new people. I admit it's not as easy as calling a game toxic and be done with it. An example, EVE is also known for doing a lot for charity, yet that doesn't seem to influence people's opinion of the community. And that's a shame. In the end the organizations will have to be smart enough to back up their claims. Lucky for us, you can always relocate if you don't like your area or planet.
  9. The dystopia wasn't necessarily aimed at EVE. It was more aimed at the reputation a FFA sandbox usually gets. Deserved or not. And when I say I don't want EVE.2. I mostly mean I don't want DU to be as toxic as EVE can be. Keep what's good, improve on the bad. I just don't want people to associate DU with visions of terror. Freedom in gameplay sure, but community building comes first for me. Competition is a great tool and there is a safe zone to chill and socialise. Will you get killed? Yes. Might be outsmarted in a trade deal? Probably. Occasionally loosing some progress? Most likely. That's the nature of the game. I don't think we disagree on that.
  10. I've played EVE enough to understand the appeal of it. Though I would never call myself an expert player. If it makes a difference for some people reading, I do not want EVE.2. I actually hope that because of the multi facet gameplay DU will offer that it won't devolve into a dystopia. Everything in DU is build around the concept of rebuilding civilization. Though that includes some pew pew.
  11. Greetings, looking forward to seeing some of those ship ideas.
  12. Personally I'm not overly worried about griefers. I always felt that the majority of griefing was caused by boredom. And while I applaud EVE for the things it did right, I think DU will have more dimensions in gameplay. This makes me hopeful to see a different culture emerge in DU. EVE has many problems and I've played with some really good people in EVE. But the majority of stories to come out of EVE were incredible scams, expert griefing, exciting war stories and the perception that the entire EVE community is the filth of the MMO genre. Which isn't quite true. I don't want this reputation for DU.
  13. It has been said by NQ that they have no intention to allow the players to create currency. And that's a very good decision in my opinion. You can always fall back on bartering if you have no currency. If anyone played Guild Wars(1), it sounds similar to what Arenanet tried. You have a few npc's that buy and sell a set number of items. According to the players buying or selling these npc's regulate the price per item. Or stop buying and selling completely. A formula based on supply and demand regulated the price and availability. If iron ore sells for a 100, people will sell iron ore to the npc's until some number is reached, at that point the npc's stops buying or drastically lower the price to reach some kind of balance.
  14. Space being "hard" is relative. We all have our own idea of hard or easy. I would think reaching space will feel as a personal achievement. If that's one of your goals. As to what exactly you would need to reach space, who knows. We can see some elements in the dev dairies but everything is subject to change.
  15. We will see, it's all speculation for now.
  16. I'm not a developer but one reason I can imagine that it won't be that easy is time. Resource gathering takes time. Production takes time. Designing takes time. I know I'm stating the obvious but it's a really important factor in motivating trade. Remember you need to be physically present to have your factory manufacture objects and so on. To be completely self sufficient you'll need a very large infrastructure with an almost unlimited amount of time. Sure, if your perfect group in that perfect scenario has everything they need whenever they need it, they wouldn't need money perse. Fortunately the chances of that happening are very small.
  17. It depends on your definition of medium sized, but I doubt it. If small to medium groups can be self-sufficient it would work against the overall goal of the game, in my opinion. Regardless of how you pay for something trade will be vital. A component will most likely exist of subcomponents and so on. Trade is essential to stimulate the emergence of cities etc.
  18. All very good points and this subject has been brought up several times. One idea has been that these npc's will switch on and off to inject currency according to a formula, when required. Naturally this is all speculation at this point.
  19. Actually, only Samsung, occulus and vive are using the oled. The reports say that the inside out tracking works pretty good, but I have no basis to compare. Although behind the back movements are solved with a predictive algorithm, so vive and occulus win that one. I'm very interested to see the competition between the platforms. And surprisingly I'm more interested in using it to watch movies than playing games. Game wise they all seem so gimmicky. But it does look like my childhood wish is finally happening.
  20. Not really, the other MR devices run at 60 or 90 hz just like the Samsung. And the other MR devices have higher resolution than the vive or occulus. Samsung does have a slightly higher resolution compared to the other MR headsets but it's comfort level is much lower, it's around 640 grams. Of course I didn't have the chance yet to put it on. Personally I'm looking at the dell visor or the MR set coming from Asus. I'll see how things evolve but I'm starting to concider buying VR.
  21. It was said a long time ago that the game is played in First Person with VR in mind. When and if it will happen.... Who knows.
  22. I never bother to look at IGN, I find it surprising that people still read that website. Though I understand why they use IGN, I think. They have a lot of readers and I think NQ wants to attract non MMO gamers as much as MMO gamers. Personally I would use massivelyop.com and mmorpg.com at this stage of development. Neither of them is perfect but nothing ever is.
