That is an interesting question. Like they said, it is a game so the explanation doesn't have to be perfect.

What I've always wondered is: if when you die it switches you (the person who died to a new universe), doesn't that mean that you are in a different universe now? So to you everything is the same except you're alive, but to everyone else in the old universe you're still dead. So following the lore, we'd all end up in different universes.

Hi Neolithic and welcome to our forum.

Before jumping to conclusion about "somebody has copied/stolen your work" and generate drama, it's important to be sure that authors of these websites haven't just done a collaborative work, or used the same type of CMS (Content Management System), as this would explain why they are similar on the format aspect. Ya know... I've been playing MMO's for a long time... and I've seen LOTS of different things happen that, for me personally, made the game less interesting...  over the years I've coined a term for it --- pablumizing ---

Pablumizing is what happens when a games features are replaced by over-simplification...

So I played WoW back when it first hit the scene... I favored certain aspects of the game... one of the types of characters I really found myself enjoying was the Hunter class character...  and there were aspects to those hunters that made them a challenge to play effectively.

As time passed, Blizzard, in their infinite wisdom, chose to water down some of the aspects of playing a hunter character... they changed how you skilled, they changed how you skilled your pet... they changed how quickly you would have a pet as a hunter to help you along... they made it so you had fewer weapons you could carry (ranged vs melee) etc... they even introduced an 'expansion' that to many were the equivalent of 'Facebook Games' where you'd assign an 'NPC' to run missions for you and then reap the rewards...  and in the process you got to build a mediocre 'Garrison' you could call 'home' in a sense... but one that was 'instanced' in the same physical location every other player got to build their garrison... it wasn't really an effective place to invite your guildies to hang out in (in fact they couldn't really enter it unless you were there with them)....

Eventually... they pablumized my interest right out of the game...

I'm all for a certain amount of automation... I think auto-turrets with a certain amount of 'automation' built in to them would be 'ok', but that a 'crewed gun' SHOULD be able to do better...

A large ship might be flown by a single pilot, but to operate effectively and to its potential should require someone to crew it...

I would HATE to see someone be able to 'eventually' build something like a 'Death-star' and then single handedly be able to pull it up to the planet I'm living on and blast me, my base, and my friends into oblivion... LOL

I've seen plenty of people cry boo-hoo on forums about "Oh wouldn't it be cool if we could make this simpler...." and the obverse of "OMG WHY DID YOU MAKE IT SO SIMPLE!?!?"

Frankly a game that holds my interest for any length of time is one that challenges my abilities to think, plan, and prosper.. something that requires More than just point and click and if I happen to have the higher level or the better gear anyone that stand in my way is dead meat....

That's what drew my interest in wanting to play this game.  If ya want point and click click click click click go play the Family Guy Quest for Stuff or Disney Magic Kingdom... or better still, <insert name of choice>Ville on Facebook.

    'nuff said!

Well that's a good way to undermine the entire premise of the game.

Having everything done by NPC's would turn the game from a MMO to a large scale RTS.

Hopefully you get what I mean by that. I'm not sure how to explain it.

The main focus of the game is player interactions. NovaQuark is building this game with tons of awesome features that favor a system run and controlled by players. As such, NPCs (at least things besides creatures or nimals) will be very limited. There won't be stereotypical "quest givers" or anything like that, the whole point of the game is to be different than all others and to be a true sandbox, and it is being built as such.

The NPCs that will be in the game will be limited most likely entirely to entities dedicated to regulating the economy. After all, with the way the game is set up, it will emulate real world economies; so you cannot keep adding money to the system. It's delocated, and must be controlled. You don't want too much money floating around, but you don't want too little money either, so it must be regulated.

The way things look as of now (though of course stuff like this is always unpredictable), NPCs will be be limited to market bots, perhaps giving money in exchange for materials or something, and will then eventually fade out of existence as the player-to-player economy gets going.

Also, if you would like to read what the devs have said about this, give the internet a search; particularly the wiki, as it has all of the devs comments archived.

I'd love to see implants or enhancements. But every bonus you get should be tied to a drawback too. Balances the game and let's people think about their choice.

And as begogian said, the advanced brain is a bad idea

Addressing your key modules, not sure if the custom implants would be a progressive inclusion.

The advanced brain would be very unfair down the long road. NQ wants the game to be progressive and a skill based game. They want you to work your way through the game, not get easily boosted. With an implant that speeds up skill training would throw away their entire idea of a long working skill tree.

Energy converters should be from the environment, like sun, heat, water, not food. They don't want to add food till way down the road so converting food to energy would not be added. It would be better seen as an upgrade to your armor/exoskeleton which turns your movements into energy, or the heat from the planet into energy.

I do like the Backup Life Support idea but again more for armor/exoskeleton. Maybe a revival system that gives you another boost. An injection and a shock and you get another "life" depending on how much damage is done to you. If you get shot down and then continue being shot, I don't see this working because you most certainly should be dead, but if you suffer damage and get downed, maybe you get another chance with this revival system.

Like ATMLV said, a lot of the ideas here would probably be better implemented into a progressive armor system. Maybe for these implants they allow you to move about the world in a unique way. Like a hand implant that allows you to access certain doors or controls when you get near them instead of using a key. A sort of NFC system for your body. It can detect your player based on the implant and grant you access or controls to machines, weapons, ships, and so on.

    - depends on who you attack. they can still choose not to be incapacitated. If you incap ALL people OR kill them -> ship is yours
    - yeah, those with more money will always have an advantage. But you'd need a special guy for reviving. Only he can do it. He has to put time and effort into it. Deaths won't matter even without such a system - no sane pirate will take expensive gear with him on a suicide mission.

    2) no they won't work better. This proposed idea is about CHOICE - want to be incapped or dead. A stun gun is no choice for the victim - you're always incapped. You contradicted yourself very well there

P2P may not always settle with the community, but F2P NEVER settles with the community.

However, if you're able to afford just a couple months... you can purchase further gametime with in-game currency.  I believe they are also looking at a severely gimped "F2P" account that can do a few basic things, like a "trial" of the game.  Not sure if that's still on the drawing board though, there was quite a bit of flak towards the idea.

Pretty self explanatory. Instead of having death be finite, let avatars who got hurt by certain type of weaponry be icnapacited and possible to be revived and / or reviving after a certain point on their own via "futurespace medicine" CPR.

    It should be noted :

1 ) this is to enable duels or arena matches that don't end with a person dying and losing all their stuff. A simple RDSM tag for the arena to enable "incapacitations"  but not "killing", would do the trick in this case.

2 ) non-lethal weaponry, for people who like to rob people , but don't like causing a person to lose their gear or what not.

3 ) poeple say I can't go without a post without mentioning something from EVE that's cool - and I will oblige - so here it is, Nosferatu weaponry, AKA, drain a person's energy. And since DU avatars are more or less cyborgs  - yeah, that nnonformer arm is definitely not part of Human Standard Edition - an avatar could have capacitors on them you can drain so you can render them incapacitated -  which would need a "healer" to come in and "jump cable you" - you know, the same thing EMTs do with a defibrilator, only not as harrowing of an experience.

4 ) if an avatar dies in a ship explosion or by being hit by a 1 TNT Ton rocket, you can bet they won't leave a mollecule behind, let alone a body to revive. No, that's not Shepard past the Mass Effect 2 opening, WAKE UP SHEEPLE :V

FAQs incoming - I can see the future.

Just want to have alternatives to murder. Like a bounty hunter bringing a person in as "alive" - with the bounty unable to "/scuicide if they decide to come in alive and be "judged" by the Intergalactic Turbonerd Tribunal. And if a person can make for a good "arena bloodsport" and the hunted has implants they risk losign upon death, you can bet some of them would choose fighting for their freedom than actually losing their gear in a 1vs10 fight.

Yes, Chronicles of Elyria. I don't hold EVE on a pedestal, I actually like other games as well.

Maybe the ability for Player Police to incapacitate someone who's intentionally blocking the entrace to a place - if the game has avtar to avatar collision and it's not ghosting / cheating the terrain and / or players involved.

I don't joke about my functioning alcoholism.

Apparently, people don't know the opposite of energy, is entropy.

Cause obviously, using a magical arm that can conjure shapes is definitely something in the feasible spectrum of possibilities, but using entropy to drain a person's capacitors they have in their body cause they are cyborgs? Nah.

    Cheers.

P.S. : Bring in the love.

Everything that follows are examples. You need roles on a Battleship Archonius because otherwise it gets pretty boring for others in this MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER online game. It has nothing to do with me being from medieval times. If you need more ideas, just use your brain to make some more roles up

    Navigation
    -bonus to velocity
    -bonus to turning speed
-bonus to travel time with FTL

    Engineering
-bonus on travel time with FTL
-bonus on power/wattage of the DPU (you can fit more on your ship)
    -bonus to engines (more hp)

    Weapons
    -bonus to target time
    -bonus to weapon range
    -bonus to ROF
    -bonus to damage

    Driving
    -bonus to overall maneuverability
    -faster recovery from impacts
    -less fuel consumption (FTL/atmospheric/space)

    Shields
    -bonus to hp
    -faster recharge
-faster shifting of certain attributes (make it stronger against EM damage for example but less against thermal)

    Armor

    -bonus to hp
-faster repair (when someone actively repairs it)
-faster shifting of certain attributes (make it stronger against EM damage for example but less against thermal)

    Power management
-turrets/antennas/engines/whatever element needs less wattage from DPU
-rerouting of power possible ("overload" shield/weapons/whatever to get more hp/more dmg/faster recharge/whatever)

    Communication
    -bonus to scanner range
-bonus to target information (velocity/players on board/weapons/whatever)
-bonus to target more ships at once and track them

    Fleet command
-bonus to whole fleet of whatever (more hp/dmg/faster/whatever)-
-sensor linking of the fleet (like in World of Tanks - scout sees someone but you are too far away -> you see him because of link)
-special maneuvers for the fleet that give a special bonus

Those are only a few possibilities you have with manning a ship. For each of those mentioned you could have skills -> players have to specialize -> enforces teamplay -> no one is a one man army -> more fun for everyone -> newbros have an actual goal and purpose and are not rendered useless because they lack overall skillpoints (they only need to be a specialist in ONE discipline!)

    in fact: EMERGENT GAMEPLAY

    ninjaedit:

oh and for the actual gameplay: I'm sure you're intelligent enough so you can come up with your own ideas how these roles can be played on a ship.
Make interfaces (scripted with lua) so
the engineer can repair stuff from his console
the driver perhaps has a 3rd person view (non zoomable/rotateable) to fly with ease
the navigator has a 3rd person vied (zoom/rotateable) so he can see whats going on on the battlefield)
the captain has screens where all infos run together
the shield guy has a console where he can shift the shields
the communication officer has a ship-wide ingame voice to command the people on the ship as the captain says
the fleet communicator has an uplink to the fleet and sees the whole stuff as a tactical map and communicates with the fleet
    ....

You don't ask for multitasking here. You ask for automated turrets. You CAN multitask in DU and you HAVE TO. You need to watch sensors, counter measures, nav tools, comms, weapons, energy, fuel, ranges and so on.
That is NOT the same thing as doing all that stuff AND firing at an enemy ship automatically.

You're, again, mixing things here. Flying such a ship ("pilot, co-pilot, weapons systems officer, electronic warfare officer, and navigator") is not the issue here. Though to me it would make more sense if you split certain roles there too, different players for efficiency (shields, engineering, fuel/engines, ...).
The issue at hand is more like a B17 Flying Fortress. Sure, you can fly it solo. But you won't get to man those machine gun ports - they'd be silent.
I don't see a problem with ammo in a bomber tbh. I only see a problem with ammo in turrets. You'd need people there, as you said.

Your logic is (and to use your metaphor there): "I want to walk, chew a gum, looking at a map, plotting my course, watching where I go, constantly checking my stamina and strenght (=fuel) while I shoot people with my gun in front of me......AND AT THE SAME TIME I want to mirror myself 40m behind myself so that I can shoot people there too"
No one will have an issue with the first part. The last part is obviously NOT what you want in a MMO, for good reasons

DU is a MMO. The whole point of the game is socializing, knowing people you can trust and playing together. I don't see why one would deliberatly jeopardize that idea by introducing NPC crew members.

If your org only consists of your friends (lets say 4) then you won't be able to man a big ship anyway. You'll be stuck with single seaters or 2 seaters.
Go make friends. Go make allies. Go make deals. Be part of an alliance to always have people to play with without giving up on your personal freedom. That's the point of a MMO.

    Pre-Alpha stage:
Organizations created here are a provisional step towards building your organizations in-game.
As the game is in development the features and systems in place will evolve and are subject to change over time. Once the game launches the organizations, the members and the information held here will be synchronised with the game world. The organization structure will be composed of Members and Legates with different roles and/or responsibilities. For more information about Dual Universe Organizations and what they will become in the future, check out the Devblog!

A “Legate” status is currently NOT reversible (it is planned to be reversible at some point though), so choose your legates wisely! What you do here matters, so be careful what you promise!
