If you look into the real world processes required for turning raw ores into usable metals it's of course really complicated with different processes like calcination and electrolysis. Not just heating things up in a furnace and melting it.

Given NQs focus on taking mining mechanics and making them into an interesting gameplay I hope NQ do something similar with refining. Of course any player should be able to build a simple low tier "smelter" and get  usable goods but there should be a mechanic where an org or individual investing time and skill points can build larger more complicated refineries to get greater efficiencies, higher grade metal's and all the advantages of economies of scale.

To get decent results from refining people should have to specialize and trade, having to build refineries are going to be the core of the first settlements.

Perhaps you general purpose smelter that anyone can build will only give you a 40% efficiency and produce a lot of waste "slag"

You would have to build dedicated blast furnaces for each ore and then put it through another refining process to get a pure metal

I have a breakdown of the numbers for you now!

    Iron Founders: 67 Members

    Bronze Founders: 32 Members

    Silver Founders: 136 Members

    Gold Founders: 308 Members

    Sapphire Founders: 54 Members

Total Founders On Forum: 714 Members

Total Forum Numbers 'Unpledged': 4286 Members

Now, of course, these numbers are probably ever changing, but at 5,000 forum members, that's about how we're looking.

Can you find out how many of those have pledged? That might be closer to the real number of players

I don't buy this argument that we don't need roads because we have hovercraft, I've been playing the latest NMS updated and just because you can hover doesn't make it that much easier to get from A to B when you have trees, rock, ravines and mountains in the way.

If you have 2 places that people will regularly want to go between people will start clearing a path, building bridges over ravines and digging tunnels to make that journey easier and faster. Building a road then is the next logical step even if it's just a cosmetic thing to indicate that "yes, this is the way to San Jose" you are not lost.

I don't know how the hover engines we have seen will work but its safe to assume your fuel efficiency will be better going along a nice flat road than up and down and dodging trees all the time

Called it. Dual Universe as a title attarcts the Second Life people. It's like catnip, only for furries

Ninja Edit : Hello Kitty is not furry. Hello Kitty transcends life and death, furry and edgelord alike.

I also think, depending on whats needed to refine, we might see mobile refineries.
Its always the cost/benefit that will dictate behaviour.

Its perhaps cheaper to send processed ore into space than raw ore. So many interesting things to figure out.

Adding to what BliitzTheFox mentioned: I watched a brief video about Economies of Scale and found it quite interesting: https://youtu.be/_rk2hPrEnk8

For example, instead of building a refinery on a distant planet, why not just haul the raw ore all the way back to your base on Alioth?
The answer would depend on the cost/difficulty of transporting ore vs the cost/difficulty of transporting the refined product. So something as simple as NQ adjusting the mass/volume of ore vs refined ore could influence where players build things. Expanding that to other things like element production, fuel, and time to travel, it can influence where and if players build cities.

    Is anyone watching the expanse?

It's a hard SciFi tv series on Syfy right now in its second season, its based on a series of novels.

What I really love about it is that all the technology is realistic, they don't have artificial gravity, shields or FTL. It's all set in our solar system some 200 years in the future where there are three factions, Earth and Mars are in a sort of cold war like America and Russia and then there are the Belters which are people who live in space in the asteroid belts but they seem to get the hard end of the deal in terms of being exploited by earth and mars.

I first found out about this last year when I came across the show on Netflix and I thought this is how I would love dual universe to be like.

This space battle is pretty much everything I've wanted from a space show forever:
Should be spoiler free, but they reference a couple of things in passing so be warned

No, organisations and alliances should set out there own rules and enforce them as they see fit.

The way I see this working is that it will be like the naval wars of the 18th century, you might be privateer in good standing to the British but the Spanish would consider you a pirate and an outlaw.

Some sort of agreement not to shoot people leaving the safe zone and "rules of war" might be welcome but that's up to organizations to decide for there members but thats more to prevent unwanted escalations.

This sound like you are overthinking it, if there is a race and its a reasonably serious thing you have a race martial supervising, you don't always need a technological solution to everything.

Yes, I was so happy to see that. All the previous videos made the vessels seem kind of magic and fake. That fighter design they did in earlier videos would never get off the ground in reality.

It makes me wonder what their plans are for in atmosphere vessels are going to be, are we going to have wing elements to generate lift like planes or are we going to need to add massive thrusters to hover in the air?

Obviously as anyone who has played ksp knows realistic engines and gravity are harsh as hell, I can except magic science fiction thrusters that can produce huge forces to make the game fun but it would be cool if we could save money and fuel by having wing elements for producing lift.

Also is there going to be drag in space? Or a speed Limit?

It seems important to clarify a few things

    - Why Novaquark implemented LUA script in Dual Universe:

The main goal is not to give a tremendous advantage to developers.
First, because LUA implementation has been decided for enabling more creativity freedom regarding the design of constructs like spaceship, not to automatize everything with bots. In short, we want for those having development skills to be able to use their talent  and be recognized for their contribution in the community, not to become the masterminds in control of everything.
Second, because there will be probably limits to what you can do with LUA scripts, for game balance.

    - About Wallstreet and NASDAQ examples:

The fact that it exists in real life doesn't mean it's a perfect system and should be copied exactly the same way in our game. The real world has flaws, that's a fact. We probably won't create a perfect system, but we can at least learn from the mistakes made in the real world. We know that almost all transactions in real time have been automatized with advanced bots reacting to the microsecond at Wallstreet. Is this really a good thing? everyone can have a different opinion on this. Is it a fun system? it's safe to assume it's not, because nearly no human action is required anymore. If it's not a fun system, then it might become questionable to implement this in a game, as the primary goal of a game is to have fun, not necessarily to copy exactly what exist in the real world. Yes, we aim to offer a realistic game world to players... to the limit where it starts to hurt the game experience.

    Best regards,

It's going to be a long time before we will actually see functioning government like organisations in DU. I think these orgs like the TU are a probably going to fail pretty hard when they have recruited all these people to roles but don't yet have the material wealth to actually implement their plans.

The way I see thing happening is people coming together for mutual defense and trade, first just pooling resources to build a territory unit around a trade post, then some defenses and a milita force. As a "safe" area is established and faith in the leaders of the organisation is built then they might start renting out space to people which becomes the revenue stream for more formal types of police an military.

The idea that anyone will pay taxes is laughable, you can't force anyone to do anything so people will just leave unless you can offer them something in return.
