Violet got a reaction from Borb_1 in Limiting Script Automation will Hinder Economic Growth
I think the actual mining part of mining in DU is going to fairly short and easy. The time consuming and difficult part will be finding meaningfully sized deposits to start with.

EVE is easy you scan, select a rock and press buttons, with DU you have to scan, scan, scan, combine the results, dig a mine shaft and then you can mine the deposit, all whilst either trying to keep hidden or keep people way who are going to try and skip the hard bits and steal the ore from right under your nose.

I don't even see how you can automate this? We have discussed mining element for constructs but how do you even automate mining in any efficient sense when the ore is hidden deep underground and you are in a totally free space with 6 degrees of movement.

Turtle mining in Minecraft worked because ore deposits were fairly common and small so strip mining out an entire area made economic sense, in this case you would probably need to much fuel.

This is why DU excites me, the devs seem to understand all the "perverse incentives" that happen with other games and have found clever ways to make something that was particularly grindy and easy to automate into something that is hard to automate and much more satisfying from a game play perspective.

Would be funny to have a eco-terrorist player faction that goes around attacking people who strip mine or don't restore the planet to relative beauty after use

You have this problem in minecraft because inventories are incredibly unrealistic and you can also destroy matter by dropping it in a fire or lava. So people tend to strip mine because there is no penalty for having tons of cobble stone in the inventory.

I hope they go for the more space engineers type system, that you cant really destroy matter so you either have to build warehouses full of rock or dump it back into the world, people will still trash areas but having areas that are that "mined down the bedrock" would not happen because people would need to fill in the hole with waste material because otherwise they would have to take it with them.

Could we at least get a small safe inventory space on the ARK ship for storing stuff in the early game?

My concern is that as a kickstarter backer when the game goes live I will have a whole stack of DACs in my inventory and no safe way to store them. I wont want to leave the safe zone untill i have stashed my valuables somewhere safe,

Exactly that! I was a bit worried that what we saw at Gamescom would be the "design" they would go for pre-alpha release... but the new stuff has a much more "polished" feel to it!
I wonder why they didn't show us that build at Gamescom... probably they just finished it a few days ago! xD

Also that autonomous drone is amazing!
...to make it follow someone around is neat, but I wonder if you could program a fully fledged autopilot using that new radar unit shown in the end. (e.g. navigating to a certain waypoint using collision avoidance) Ok, they said automation will be very limited, but we'll see!

This months DevDiary includes info on the (Pre-) Alpha, a view at the game menu, a glimpse at the inventory system, redesign of the cockpit widgets and several things about building and scripting!

As far as I remember, there isn't any kind of NDA in official alpha. I believe NQ even stated once they'd encourage sharing footage of the game.

For ATV-members, the ATV forum and ATV-alpha, there will be a NDA however.

Once again, everyone is thinking about what they want, rather than what needs to be done to make the game a success.

There will have to be censorship of certain content because actual real-world countries have laws about what kind of media you can promulgate. So, if there are giant billboards flashing the swastika or other Nazi propaganda, NQ could potentially face fines, or even the banning of DU, under German law. The same could be said for statements that are racist, homophobic, anti-immigrant, or whatever, in countries like France or Great Britain, or under EU hate-crime laws.

Personally, I don't really care. Internet trolls don't bother me much. But there are people with real power in the real world who feel differently. Furthermore, it will not be good for DU to become known as a game filled with racists and haters (which is what people will say if there's swastikas everywhere, regardless of the intentions) because then the vast majority of people won't play it. That is bad for the game for obvious reasons. I'm sure the next comment will be someone ranting about how they don't want to play with people who can't take constant Hitler jokes, but in reality a game like DU needs a decently large player base just to have a functioning economy. This isn't about you, it's about having a successful game, so get over yourself.

Tl;dr - There will be censorship, and that is a good thing. Your precious feelings can get over it, because DU is a game, not a free speech simulator.

The July 2017 devdiary is here! Huge focus on Lua for this one. Some crazy cool stuff has been shown! I think the biggest overall announcement is that it has been shown we can add in our own images now onto screen elements. Edit: appears someone already posted it in the Arkship pub. With all these forum updates you think there'd be a delete button
