ELX987 reacted to Deadrank in Alien Cores
As seen during the beta, since the introduction of the Alien Cores in Athena, the group with the largest PvP force in the game can hold all 10 cores without much trouble. My personal opinion would be to make defending all 10 cores in the game virtually impossible for a single group/alliance to do (assuming there is an opposing side). However, this is somewhat of a balancing nightmare and would get complicated very quickly.

My initial proposal would be to make Plasma a non-warpable item (similar to Aphelia Mission packages). This would allow smaller groups to attempt to "pirate" plasma off of the main group holding the cores while they fly it back to safe zone. This still gives the core owners the ability to decide when and where they want to put the plasma at risk and require the "pirates" to do planning reconnaissance, etc in order to pull off a heist. But it at least gives non-core owners a chance at getting a hold of some plasma, even if they aren't a big enough group to hold a core, but still requires them to PvP for it.

From an outside perspective, implementation of this should be relatively easy (all mechanics are already in-place for the mission packages). I feel like it gives some balance to the alien cores in regards to smaller PvP factions, while not really making it harder for the larger factions to still control plasma.

    Thanks,
    Dead

NQ has said, once you enter the PvP zone, you consent to PvP.  If you choose to not be prepared to engage that falls on you.  That means in the PvP zone there is no such thing as "non-consensual PvP" as it is explicitly stated the mere act of you leaving a safe zone into a pvp zone is you consenting.

With launch coming up and little to scant details on over-reaching game design implementations of features promised that won't make it to release. Pair that with features in Athena that were never promised... and it makes sense that the DU Community is at least owed a video explaining the vision of the game going forward... as it's clearly not the one people bought into.

I'm not sure this is a devblog.. it's mostly a very generic description of what will be introduced at Athena and the only thing that is somewhat specific is the timer on shields..

    Which issues?

UPDATE: Not sure how I read minimum as maximum but the text does say minimum.. so let's see how this plays out. I removed my comments for now..

    Then on the stasis weapon:

This is NQ ticking the "we have provided ECM as defense" box.. How this would as a counter is entirely unclear though as it does not in anyway actually provide an out and still forced a non-combatant into PVP engagements. It is a nonsense argument.

    On PVP voxel improvements
So, what is the issue and how have you been able to improve the system?

    And the banger:

NQ: "play the way we want or we wil make you"

First off, so much for player driven content and gameplay. That seems to only apply as long as you play nicely with what NQ wants.
Second, would be nice if NQ actually shared their vision for Dual universe, not just for PVP but in general, as it would seem to me that it is entirely unclear what that vision is and frankly, I have to doubt that there is such vision.

Good info, thanks for the devblog. But how exactly do the stasis weapons work? Do they decrease the max speed of the target by a flat amount? Or do they reduce engine/retro/adjustor thrust? Or do they increase the the effective mass of the ship, sort of like ships currently behave when approaching max speed? Does this affect the target's adjustor maneuverability?

EDIT: Also, could you give us the formula for the ship speed changes, so we can get some expectations of how fast ships might be?

here's how this should be done:

-LIMIT APHIELIA PACKAGES PER SHIP FLAT OUT.
-REDUCE ALL MISSION REWARDS BY 20-30%.
-SET A WEEKLY LIMIT PER CHARACTER FOR HOW MANY MISSIONS THEY CAN DO THAT EQUATE TO OVER A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF QUANTA.

ELX987 reacted to blazemonger in NQ: Time to answer the question - Will there be a wipe?
    @Snipey @FerroSC

Backers have spent money on the game early on, they have enjoyed free access during (pre)alpha and beta as a perk, On release is where the game is supposed to start for real and that is where their pre-purchased gametime (the DAC included in the packs, which is what actually represents the pack value) will come into play.

beta key accounts are accounts which have not spend any money on the game, they are literally freerolling during beta. You may speculate that many of these will just sub sure, I think it is far more likely that many of these accounts are already inactive and the player has left since they do not have the "attachment" the backers have. Also, many backers have used these keys for alts and of those alts some will live off of the DAC on the account, some will simply stop, and some may start a sub.

Many backers bought additional packs to gain many alts in order to enrich their main account come release, based off of the (IMO incorrect) assumption that there would not be a wipe beyond beta. I actually think many in the "if NQ wipes, I quit" camp are such backers. They pretty much exploited the backer packs to build (extreme) wealth to eventually move all of that into their main account. And not just the wipe is a threat to that, the changes to orgs, the taxes, the core slots, it all plays against these exploits and thus the same group of players will rage and make lots of noise against it. Nothing new here, it happens across most sub based MMOs, but I am fairly certain this is a factor. And it is a factor which is not good for the game and part of the reason why I believe NQ will wipe prior to release.

Personally, I have four backer accounts. I bought them as I wanted to support the game. of all the beta keys I had, I have used 7 myself and gave the rest away. On release I have well over 4 years of DAC and do not expect DU to be around that long (I also expect NQ to either up the sub to $15 at launch or compensate backers for the devaluation of their packs by adding 30$ of the total DAC amount at launch), If I continue to play, I will probably keep 4 or 5 accounts active and drop the rest.

A wipe will not have any relevance to "a level playing field" as backers will keep their talent points and blueprints so they are well ahead anyway. It is about cleaning up the world and taking away a (misplaced) sense of an equal start for many who may otherwise not jump on as new players. And yes, eliminating the massive stockpiles and quanta account some have amassed during beta plays into that too.

I really believe it will be in the best interest of the game for NQ to wipe and am pretty sure they have made the call to do so some time ago. However, whether they do or not will not really impact me much. And I believe most who are in favour of a wipe are of the same mindset. So, this is not really a "yes/no" it is a "preferably yes/no" situation. And if NQ had decided to not wipe, they would have come out and say so by now as it makes absolutely no sense not to. And from that, it is entirely reasonable to assume that NQ either does not know yet, which would be really bad with release mere months away, or they will wipe and so will hold off on announcing until shortly before the moment it happens for justifiable reasons business wise. And that last option is the only one which makes any sense at this point.

As it stands, what is far more concerning to me than the question of a wipe is that NQ is going to go to release with a game which really still has not reached actual beta stages (frankly it's still in a pre-alpha state) and still has a lot of core features, many of which were part of the initial KS pitch, to get implemented. If the game survives long enough, it wil take them years to just get all that in with the way NQ operates. Their tone-deaf attitude towards their community which is still very much alive, despite many "we heard you and will do better" promises is another problem.

Stasis weapons are used to reduce the maximum velocity of targeted ships, a measure towards bringing better balance to PvP. Big armored ships with powerful space engines will no longer have the advantage that allowed them to easily escape more agile smaller designs.
I appreciate you listening to the community on this, it will help bring some much needed complexity to pvp.
We are also altering the behavior around a construct’s maximum speed. Constructs’ mass will now impact their speed; the heavier the ship, the less its maximum speed will be. Thus, smaller ships will be able to catch up bigger ones despite the latter having bigger engines than the former.
Barring a truly absurd speed-mass line (like stopping 1kt or heavier ships from exceeding 20kkph) this seems near pointless. Most of the M and L cores I've seen for pvp were effectively fly-weight given the sizes of their cores. The ships it sounded like this was meant to nerf have this bad habit of functionally being 4-10 engines with a fuel tank, a shield, guns, and a control chair, so they tend to be lighter than they stuff they are out-accelerating anyways.

Sure, it will help pirates catch haulers out in deep space without needing those haulers to be in a warp-pipe, but it wasn't exactly something they needed help in or that will improve their returns by much. Not being spotted has always been a far more effective way to avoid pirates than hitting top speed.

You'd probably solve the issue more effectively (and in a way that brakes science-immersion less) by capping top speed to shield-size.

Unfortunately, no, M core constructs do not have a smaller cross-section. There is no minimum size mechanic for cores, hence why people keep seeing M or L cores on their radar when they get attacked, but if they get a good look at their attackers they realize most of 'em would fit on an S core and only have M or L to get at the weapons. Capping shields to core size (without other changes) will just result in M weapons and an L shield on an L core that would fit in to an S space. They probably need to add in a power/heat mechanic if they want to try an bump up cross-sections, using it to get people to put big solar-panels/radiators on a ship's exterior as would be appropriate to handle their giant engines/shields/weapons.

Amusingly enough, the maximum speed of a thruster's exhaust in real life does not determine that thruster's top speed, only the speed at which it can accelerate. The explosion propelling the thruster is not a fixed point in space, but rather a physical thing with mass that is itself moving while it pushes the associated thruster forward. Its essentially like the "throwing a ball while standing an the bed of a moving truck" thing, except your thrusters are (hopefully) accelerating for longer than just the second it takes someone to throw a ball.

ELX987 reacted to Wolfram in A few thoughts on the wipe topic (and NQ's silence on it)
First things first, I'd like to just leave my opinion clear here, I really don't care if a wipe happens or not. I've pretty much burnt out of the game over the last few months and the only reason I keep a subscription running is because I have hopes that at some point it will get better again, and if it does, at least I still have my things somewhere, as they took over a year to get to where they are right now.

That being said, I obviously would just pause my subscription if NQ announced a wipe, at least until the game is wiped and some minimal amount of content is back. I simply don't have a reason to pay for something and invest time on it if I know it will be deleted in a few weeks or months, and also won't have any reason or even time to play when everything is back to stone age.

Oh yes, and being back at stone age, that's a good topic. NQ is selling the game with lots of promises (one of them, back when I joined, was of persistance, but let's forget that), such as big battles, etc. The issue with that, specially since everything is player-made, is that after a wipe the game will be basically empty. Pretty much all there will be to do is to get started. Even proper professions won't be a thing, since everyone will be stuck grabbing rocks, queueing talents and starting over. PVP is even worse, first because it's a high risk investment, then also because pretty much everyone will be on the safe zones anyways (even if only Sanctuary is the safe zone, after all, everyone is starting over).

A bit related to starting over is how the wipe would happen. Lots of people seem to want something partial just to "fix the balance", which we all know won't do much. A good part of the imbalance of this game is caused by the whales who own a ton of beta key alts and pretty much have those characters maxed out in some skill trees. If talents aren't wipe then those accounts could either have a massive advantage against anyone - newbie or not - or even be sold to new players or anyone looking for an advantage, even though that's against the rules.

For that previous point, what I think could work, is requiring a 3 month+ sub at least, at beginning, to keep the points. To anyone properly playing the game it will make no difference, after all it's the minimum sub time you'd need anyways. If you have one or two alts and think it's worth keeping, well you can go for it too, but would quickly make things difficult to handle for whales, since they would have to expend more and more to keep their 10+ alts running.

And for a final point, the NQ silence. While I understand they are on a very tough position, they should at least start this discussion with the community. Yes, obviously lots of players will stop playing with a wipe, specially people paying, but I'm sure many are already getting tired and just feeling like giving up the game altogether because of this lack of proper communication. There's also the chance of a massive backlash when the wipe happens. The earlier NQ starts talking about it, the less it will feel like the whole silence thing was a scam to get players to pay for something they won't keep. And trust me, since the whole reason for a wipe is getting ready for release, the worse thing you can do is to leave players with that feeling, as that can (and will) easily turn into bad reviews and things that will turn off potential new players.

Anyways, if you read until here thank you so much! I hope the best for this game, for real.

You won’t want to miss a moment of the action when the Athena update hits the Public Test Server (PTS) on Friday, April 1st from 09:00 UTC to April 4th 09:00 UTC.

Athena is the last major update (there might be several significantly smaller ones though) before the official release, with many features to look forward to, including some that will add extra spice for PVPers. The PTS preview means that if you have a Dual Universe subscription, you can get hands-on with the new content and improvements before they are introduced on the Live server. Not only that, but you can also use this opportunity to give us your constructive feedback. The more feedback we have from you, the better we can fine-tune the update!

With Athena being the last major update before the official release, we are aware you might have many questions about the future. In the coming weeks, we will have more information for you on some of the most discussed questions you might be wondering about. This includes long time topics such as will there be a wipe at official release, Avatar vs. Avatar and DAC implementation. We appreciate your patience and we will have the answers for you as soon as we can.

During the PTS weekend, the Design team would appreciate your feedback on these features of Athena:
The new space warfare system centers around alien core units that will spawn in PvP zones and can be located via space radars. These are resource-generating facilities, like space mining points, that can be claimed by players and organizations. Once you’ve claimed them, accumulate resources and fight for its control!
Space mining units and relic plasma collectors may be crafted, purchased, and sold. They will be used to extract the resources from alien core units.
Stasis weapons are used to reduce the maximum velocity of targeted ships, a measure towards bringing better balance to PvP. Big armored ships with powerful space engines will no longer have the advantage that allowed them to easily escape more agile smaller designs. Stasis weapons can be crafted like other PvP items. They use their own specific amunitions, which can also be crafted.
We are also altering the behavior around a construct’s maximum speed. Constructs’ mass will now impact their speed; the heavier the ship, the less its maximum speed will be. Thus, smaller ships will be able to catch up bigger ones despite the latter having bigger engines than the former.

Other key beats of Athena include:
A revamped FTUE to provide a better, more easily comprehensible starting experience for new players. We want to give new players all the information they need to settle into DU with a solid foundation. The FTUE is accessible on Haven, a new moon which is forever in a safe zone, out of PvP battles.
A brand-new system map (F4 > "System" tab), to explore the star system of Helios. With 3D models and precise positions in space of your constructs, planets, alien core units, points of interests, better tools to navigate the map, set warp waypoints properly in addition to destination waypoints, and more!
New skybox and stars rendering improvements that you’ll see as soon as you leave the atmosphere.
Improved water visuals (on every planet containing it), as well as better flashlight visuals.
We are adding Mining Units Lua API, for you to customize how you want to monitor your mining activities, accessible from the Codex (F1).
Athena will also introduce Dual Universe first space market! You’ll be able to shop without making planetfall, directly from your ship. Head to the center point of the safe zone, between Alioth, Madis and Thades. Happy shopping.

For more information on the PTS, including how and where to access it, head here.

We hope you’ll enjoy trying all Athena has to offer. Your feedback has proved invaluable and has helped us in improving Dual Universe. Please share your thoughts here!

I give it just 10% power and off it go like a bat out of hell. seems there's not much difference from 10% power to 100% power. I'd fly thru my territory. I'd hit full reverse yet it did nothing, so I'd turn around and hit full forward and it would then slow a then shoot me forward right back thru my territory the other way. know control at all. I don't even see how you can land like that. crash yes. I did this several times got pissed and just rammed it in the ground in my territory. Repaired it and just left it there.
It was meant to be my work horse for Minning.
