Aphelia finally let me out of the freezer. She had slowly warmed me up while she trained me and pumped nutrients into my body, a frail shell of what I had once been. But then we all looked like that, barely human, mentally vacant, and emotionally spent. Huddled together, our bodies thawed out, we were raw, and scared.

The ark was relatively warm compared to the freezer, more of which were opening every minute spilling out the human meat cargo they carried and had kept alive for thousands of years only to deliver them to an empty planet with only the words of a computer for safety. Yeah, welcome to Utopia.

I looked at the other meat skeletons. I didn’t know any of their faces. If I had, I wouldn’t have recognized them. I sure as hell that none of them recognized me. Ten thousand years is a long time to hold a grudge, but there were those that might. My dealings had not always been on the up and up.

When you owe money and you know how to circumnavigate security systems, you start taking jobs that you might previously have considered morally objectionable. But you justify it to yourself: Just this once; Just until I get out of debt; just until I have a little extra—then you stop questioning it because the truth is, we’re all going to die and it’s not going to matter who has what or how they got it. What is it the saying: Possession is nine-tenths of the law?

But who was the law here?

We had no possessions, only ourselves. I was sure the first murder would happen that first week. Maybe not murder, but the first death from fighting over possessions. You really can’t have law without government and there was no government nor would there be for some time to come. Government requires reason and people operating on basic fight or flight rarely use reason. I saw that before we left Earth. And why we waited for that first fight, the first death came within the first hour as someone decided to just walk off the top of the ship.

I would love to have the ability to mirror your ship, so you can build a large ship and make sure you can achieve symmetry (if that is what you want) in any axis you desire.

Also the ability to blueprint (or what ever term you would like to use) your ship/station/drone/skyscraper(and so on), either for future use or to share/sell to others.

I would also be nice to have some sort of in-game mechanic to allow you to i.e. mass produce a certain ship, module and so on. So once you have a nice design for a fighter you can mass produce it and ship it to the front line or anywhere it may be needed.

Also a way to merge "grids", so you can build a station or ship in modules, and later on merge them together. Or i.e. build and send out a modular ship, that once it reaches its destination (be that within the influence of the same star, or a distant one) it can be disassembled and reassembled into a small orbital facility for example. You could have your main base of operation at a location which is abundant with raw resources and ship modules to an orbital facility that is in an area that has tactical value, but no infrastructure to build your base of operation.

It would also be awesome if we could have some sort of basic or limited ability to build and program drones, drones that could be setup to do anything from:
basic defence (i.e. orbital gun turrets and such) scouting drones (i.e. programmed to do a wide orbit of a planet you are wanting to exploit) space mines (need I say more? lay dormant using minimal power, using whatever ingame mechanic there is to avoid detection, and flare to life once its radar/ladar/lidar (or what ever ingame system you will have available) detects another object and track towards the target) Repair drones (using any ingame mechanics for doing repairs, detecting the player structure it is designated to detect using fof if available and attempting to repair the structure)

MMM,  power to exile a player from a territory, thats a good idea. Piss too many players off and you get blacklisted by several Orgs and can't go to them either. Yes in a way that would relieve some of the stress.  Still...

Personally, I'm in the boat of a 50/50 type player.

Solo play needs to be supported, simply because friends are not always online, so in order to keep people in the game, solo play must be feasible. If it is feasible, then some players will choose to do it. That's their right, and it doesn't really negatively impact me, so they're welcome to it.

That being said, if I've learned anything from playing EvE online (the only other big sandbox game with truly emergent gameplay), it's that playing with a group completely changes the game and makes it so much more fun. I think that everyone intending to play the game solo should seriously consider at least giving one of these organizations a shot, because there is such a difference in the stories, politics, and fights that are just simply not attainable while playing solo.

That said, I'll play solo some both because I'll be on when friends aren't, and sometimes I just like the idea of solo roaming combat (did it for a long time in eve, both in low sec and null sec.)

That's just what they want us to believe.

In truth the Neutron star was a giant Illuminati conspiracy perpetrated to get all the world governments to build massive Arkships for them to escape an overpopulated and polluted planet.

All of the Arkship passengers had their memories wiped so they wouldn't remember the true reason for their departure, and so they might have the opportunity to rebuild civilization without bringing the weight of their past with them. It was also a safety guard against anyone who might be a traitor to the cause. In doing so they underestimated the true nature of man though.

Through playing the game and exploring we will discover ancient alien artifacts that point towards the existence of a massive alien civilization somewhere in the past.

Eventually we'll all discover that the "Aliens" weren't alien at all, and that they were actually the last remnants of a long extinct human civilization that had gone into the stars in search of the Arkships.

WHAT IS DUAL UNIVERSE?Dual Universe is a sandbox first-person MMORPG set within a seamless Sci-Fi universe made of millions of planets. The world is entirely editable, and the game focuses on massive scale emergent gameplay based around exploration, voxel building, trade, politics and warfare.

My read on this is that it is completely possible to play the game without PvP action, even in PvP zones. All it requires is that a player choose not to attack another player. That is the freedom of choice. That also means that it is possible for a player to venture into PvP territory and not have another player attack them. It doesn't mean that it is what would happen, only that it is possible.

The fact that the devs are designing different ways to make an area a safe zone without it starting as such indicates they realize there will be a need for new safe zones, but making safe-zones means taking away from PvP territory which isn't fair to PvP players, but which does make sense as civilizations go in the real world.

If you want to stay safe, the only way is not to venture into PvP territory. If we decide to do so, that is the risk we take as part of the game. But, being attacked isn't a guarantee.

Got to admit I love food mechanics, especially if intuitive and it feels complimentary to gameplay,  rather than a hindrance. Obvious example being Minecraft as most people know.

I also would be up for Woodcutting and other skills, all those beautiful trees hopefully have a purpose too other than looking pretty  .

I hope DU offers an array of skillsets for different types of people.

I would like to see things like Agriculture, woodcutting and other more Passive jobs for Pve players. This could change the landscape in planets, just imagine that at the start of the game you see this forest infested planet with rivers and mountains then in lets say a year from release this planet has less forest(WoodCutting)and in its rivers borders you will see plantations. Now we coudld is for what could we use the Wood that we harvested for Fuel or it could also be used for decoration. Now for stuff like edible plant it could be used for filling you're  hunger bar or Buff?

Minecraft has food, DayZ has food, Rust has food, Empyrion has food, tons of survival games have food and they don't turn into the scenario you're talking about. If there's no survival mechanics they may as well just be building Everquest Landmark 2.0 .

The thing about this game that I like is unlike Eve the universe is almost infinite.  This stops the staleness of a couple huge groups controlling most of the universe suffocating any newbies.  Newbies and new organizations can simply move out further to build their empire.  No organization will be able to control the universe or even a handful.

As stated above, this isn't so much as a level system and like Eve someone a couple months in could have more fighting skills than someone a couple years in who worked on industry or whatever.

Also maybe this is just me being hopeful, but with the openness on a scale never done before this truly allows some ingenuity.  New situations allow for new opportunities and those even new may see a better way to do something or make something.  I've heard of new games as they come out being called an Eve killer but if JC and crew pull this thing off this really can be an Eve killer.

I spent a week listening to Aphelia speaking in my head telling me about psych profiles and aptitudes. She said I was appropriate for ground or ship maintenance. Just what I went to school to do. But she was looking at aptitude and not reality.

Interesting that I started thinking of the voice in my head as a she. Can a metallic voice have a sex? Can a computer be one or the other? I think it is natural to think of inanimates as the opposite sex. It was a comfort and an affirmation of the self. At least it was for me.

Aphelia told me about Kyrium and the things I could build with it. Of the tool I would wear and use to manipulate the miracle substance. She showed me a utopia. That was a mistake I think. It was going to be a struggle. We would be protected close to the ship, now useless for flight but still useful as a base and provider, for a time. It’d be a miracle if most of us survived the first year. Hell, we didn’t know how long a year would be. But Aphelia told us that too.

Homesteading would be hell, not utopia. At least that I believed at the time. Experience has proven I was right. Too many refugees trying to eek out enough food and water on a planet we didn’t know, a planet with its own dangers, its own predators—which included us. Earth showed humans destroyed whatever we touched. Funny, we thought destroying our eco-system would be our end. It wasn’t.

When I was a kid, I learned about nomadic tribes and the migratory cultures that existed before man learned agriculture. We’d have to do that. I learned about the wheel and the lever, Galileo, gravity, the solar system, all things we’d have to do again. But Aphelia was guiding us, at least for now. I thought that would make us week. We needed to learn from ourselves to make our mistakes and find new ways to do old things, and new things that neither we nor Aphelia could have thought of. But then what of man?

Even at the end, Winston had fallen to our predatory nature. Even after our destruction was known, we still gave in to greed and violence, natural states for some. There would be no room for avarice in utopia. We would have to work together for the common good. But could we? Could mankind put aside basic genetics? Could we contain our instincts that told us to fight or flight? In the end, it had still come to fight. So many wars. So many lives. Would we do better? Utopia? I doubt it. More like Purgatory.

I'm sure some of us could cook up a deep but not complex food mechanic that wont burden other players. All you need is an auto galley for the non foodie players, space pirates,  and various farm units for the rest of us.

We could even have a planter Element that goes on a voxel build with green voxels that grow. Have the voxel mages come up with 2000 crop shapes but it's really just one element replacing a set of voxels with another set of voxels over time in a fixed space. Fuzzy green, brown and wheat coloured voxels. Fruit of all colours and various shapes.
At 25 cm a voxel pumpkins are easy, apples need to be smoothed a little more and wheat is just dirt with a decoration Corn just needs to be a fuzzy voxel with fuzz that goes sideways. If the voxels can have normal maps then we could do even better. Throw in a few bush, stem and leaf meshes, already seen in the demo and we're almost done.
Add another plate and table Element and the recipes arrange voxels on it and you have a banquette. Almost all art but a notch up from 23rd century space pirate algae hardtack. Of cause the hardtack makes lembas bread look like a light snack.

Add a few non combat bonuses; social standing, awareness and creative intelligence that  buff various skills. Have good food push them up and that does more than just keep you alive.

If we were supposed to dream during the Long Night, I don’t know, nor do I remember any dreams I might have had. But the week thawing out gave me plenty of time to dream, to consider my past and to consider the future. Considering the present didn’t matter. We were all human popsicles thawing in the freezer.

My life was neither blessed nor privileged. And I didn’t live the best of lives. Gambling and speculation left me needing cash too often and the banks had standards I couldn’t live up to. They called me a high risk. My mother died my first year of university. My father followed a couple of years later. The money left from their life savings and life insurance paid off my last year of school and set me up for a meager living. Work would supply my livelihood.

I didn’t enjoy university. The deaths of my parents left me in a depression and although my then girlfriend tried, but I pushed her away. By the time I realized, it was too late.

I had studied mechanical engineering at university, minoring in electrical. I had always been good at taking thing apart. Sometimes I could put them back together. That was the unfortunate part. I had great theory, but I couldn’t make them work. There was something missing. No one keeps you long if you can’t fix what you broke. And my side jobs couldn’t keep up with my growing gambling debts.

Banks wouldn’t talk to me. My savings were more than gone. I owed money to all the wrong people and they were coming to collect, only their type of collections didn’t always require money. With hell raining down on us any minute, people still worried about getting what they were owed. They weren’t going on an ark. Why did they care? That’s when I ran across Winston. For all I knew, it could have been the collectors that left him there. I wasn’t going to be Winston. I wouldn’t be a nameless victim. A little blood. An eye. A chip. I would go where they couldn’t find me.

I don’t actually know who JQ23 – Winston is, or was. He was dead when I found him, the victim of a mugging in the chaos of what was being left behind. People faced with the impending and yet still acting out of primitive greed, the reptilian emerging for last effort of fulfilling basic needs, but looting and murder are seldom basic.

Some people might consider it barbaric, but I noticed the identi-chip his predators overlooked, or left behind. Whichever it was, it was an opportunity. The blood was easy to come by. Winston was bleeding out on the pavement. The eye was a little more difficult. Several minutes went by, maybe half-an-hour before I could bring myself to excise it from the socket. But it was needed. Without the eye as a template, I couldn’t make the contacts, and it had to be before the eye clouded over. Some might call it luck that I found him there, fresh and still warm. There is no such thing as luck. Preparation and opportunity are deliberate.

Boarding had just passed the halfway point when I arrived in the throng, a sea of people escaping a sinking ship. I figured this was the best time, when the gate-keepers were most complacent, making cursory security checks but really looking for the end of the shift because everything had become routine. A scan of an embedded chip, a prick of a false thumb-pad, a scan of a well-crafted contact lens, and Winston was just another rat.

I couldn’t help but think of him lying there on the pavement, a victim of the mindlessness that accompanies the end of the world. Maybe he was the lucky one. A quick death. It might have been painful. He might have been frightened. But it was quick. At least he wouldn’t have to wait, watching death approach from a million miles away, and then a hundred-thousand. No one would ever see it actually hit the Earth, by then gravity would have probably been distorted and the planet would have started to break up, or not. I’m not a scientist. I don’t know these things. But I do know no one would still be alive, and definitely not Winston.
