ForlornFoe reacted to soulerlunar in Resurrection Node
So as I have been reviewing the game's lore, I came across the background for how Resurrection Node technology works. Now, for those who don't know, according to the official lore bible the current in lore explanation for Resurrection Nodes is based upon the many worlds principle. The idea is that once your character dies, the node switches the universe to another in which everything is the same, except instead of being dead, you are in the Resurrection Node. In order to conserve energy, the node only restores your naked body when it does this.
Now, this is a fairly functional explanation, but the argument why we can't use these nodes for other purposes that involve parallel universes is fairly weak. Realistically, when this technology was discovered it would've been further expanded on by scientists in order to replicate the process. There is no practical reason that I can see why scientists on Earth wouldn't have tried to make one big node to try and replicate the entire population of the earth off of the planet. Maybe that seems far fetched, but it seems difficult to believe that the nodes can only replicate universe with things inside of themselves. And while this is a cool explanation either way, there seems to be a simpler answer.
I propose that instead of having Resurrection Nodes use the many worlds principle, instead you have them designed to atomically replicate the dead person inside the node. Because players always are wearing their space suit, it would make sense that a system could be in place to constantly scan the body of the player to send back to the resurrection node. The node is given this data, and so when the feed stops when the player is killed, then the node knows to rebuild the entire player from the ground up; atom by atom, molecule by molecule, cell by cell. This could also give a good in game reason why they need so much energy, as they would be converting energy into matter to form the players. Even more, the node can only build one player because the data is so complicated, that there isn't enough memory in the node to store the constant data of more than one person.
This is just an opinion, but I feel that the explanation for resurrection nodes is the one lacking section of the entire lore. I think it could be easily simplified down to not require quantum mechanics or anything nearly as complicated. Thank for taking the time to read my suggestion.
If you want a look at the lore bible, where I got all my information on the explanation for resurrection nodes, here's the link: https://devblog.dualthegame.com/2016/11/16/official-lore-bible/

Truly impressive, bookmarked and on the checklist. I think Oz will flourish, the idea and progress so far are strong indicators of that.
I know very well how punctual your writing is (beats mine for sure), but this sentence at the beginning of your post bugs me. Minor typo at the end?
"A goal not driven by the reward of money or the promise a fame"
Thanks to you and the team for creating another quality DU community tool.

Outpost Zebra
It has been a labour of love, it has. For weeks, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to achieve a goal. A goal not driven by the reward of money or the promise of fame; a goal unaltered by difficulties and undimmed by rumours. That goal, my friends, is Outpost Zebra.
This humble Outpost has no other purpose, but to spread the news of Dual Universe far and wide, to provide a platform for interaction between organisations and players alike. Consider it a home away from home, the figurative middle ground where parties on both sides of the spectrum meet to discuss events, share ideas, express opinions, promote their interests, find new friends…recruit new members.
In the words of Falstaf:
Today, that idea has finally taken form. Aided by the ever ready help of ATMLVE, the skill of Epidemic, the expertise of Kael and the knowledge of Anonymous, and the quiet support from members of this Community, Falstaf’s dream of the platform for ideas and opinions to be shared has come true.
“Oz”, as we affectionately call it, is still in its infancy. It will mature in due time, and grow greater than many believe it can. However, for that to happen, Oz will need your patronage and your help.
Its goal is not to replace the Dual Universe Forums. No. That is neither our plan nor its purpose. Its goal is to complement the Forums, reach a wider audience, provide a place where conflicts are set aside and new ideas are birthed over jokes, galleries, articles, stories and media.
Outpost Zebra is a vantage point, looking over Dual Universe and bringing its best to you without the need to login and play.
Hopefully, it will convince thousands that Dual Universe is a life worth living.
It’s online now – the Outpost is active.
Cheers.

ForlornFoe reacted to Shynras in Planets running out of resources?
Resources don't regenerate.
Let's define:
-LLR (low level resources): common in large quantities
-HLR (High level resources): rare in small quantities
-P1 starting planet, Px other planets
1)HLR on P1 run out before LLR (consequence of game balance)
2)Players move to Px for more HLR, and they'll mine LLR there too (for convenience)
3)This means less people mining on P1 for LLR, so they'll take more time to run out
4)The more time passes, the more the mining rate of LLR on P1 will go down (same for other planets)
Now let's add a new variable: rarity R. With time, LLR on P1 are running out, so their R (rarity) will go from "common" to "rare". This means that it's not going to be convenient for a miner to look for rare LLR on P1 and no HLR, instead they'll go on a fresh planet where they can mine common LLR and rare HLR.
In conclusion:
-Since all this scales with time, a planet will never run out of LLR unless a group of players tries to make that happen on purpose ( it would take a lot of time, considering planet surface and planet depth, and wouldn't even be profitable)
-A planet can run out of HLR to a certain degree (maybe there's still a few pieces of materials somewhere hidden underground, but extremely rare)
-New players will be able to mine LLR for a certain period of time from release, after that technology will be so advanced that they'll easily buy a basic ship from the market to fly on a different planet (or a different solution that devs will provide with expansions and patches after release).
-Chances are that after a certain period of time, the landscape will be partially destroyed like minecraft (or the real world). It may be uglier, but the game is player driven, so if you don't like it, just create an organization with the purpose of filling the holes (or conquer your private land).
Edit. I've seen on minecraft clans of players or servers with strict rules about digging holes without filling them, partially cutting trees, building 1x1 voxels towers, .... so an organization can easily do the same thing, and keep its territories pristine at least in appearence (the bigger the org the bigger the territory)

ForlornFoe reacted to Lord_Void in What Causes the Fall of Empires in a Single-Shard Universe?
It comes down to one thing: trust.
Trust that your leaders will do their job.
Trust that your group will protect you.
Trust that there will be content.
Trust that people will treat decently.
One thing that generally happens is that when an alliance starts to lose, the different factions within it (there are always factions, even in DU groups) begin to blame each other and they lose trust. People also jump ship when things are not going well. If you lose half of your space, many people will just pack up and leave rather than stay and fight. Other times leaders are ineffective or the just log off and never come back.
I guess in it's most basic form, something will happen that causes a trust issue, which throws other things out of balance and so on until it collapses.
You mentioned the TU and wondered if the same thing could happen to them. I say, absolutely. Already, looking in as an outsider, it seems as if there are several factions with in the TU that do not trust each other. Does this mean they will fall? Not necessarily, but they need to address and rectify any trust issues. (Sorry TU, not trying to pick on you, it was just mentioned) This can happen in any group, especially large groups. There is a certain inertia that causes large groups to fracture.

ForlornFoe reacted to Warden in What Causes the Fall of Empires in a Single-Shard Universe?
I simply view it on a large scale: nothing lasts forever. Time kills everything; all Empires fall.
You can only try to delay this process. How?
Many above have given tips or explained how to not fail too early.
I think it is vital to not start with (or develop) the expectation to rule it all or expand endlessly.
Expectations, skills and having the right people in the right positions. Easier said than done.

ForlornFoe reacted to Ben Fargo in What Causes the Fall of Empires in a Single-Shard Universe?
The building aspect of DU could help organizations last longer than in games without it. I expect many organizations will develop a distinctive style of building and they will almost certainly have unique structures everyone associates with them. Those could give the organizations a stronger sense of identity that enable them to persist. Good leadership would still be as important as ever, but if people have a stronger identification with their organization, they might tend to try to oust bad leaders, instead of forming new organizations. That is, of course, just my speculation.

So I wrote a topic on TU leaving CSyn, and got some - deserved - flak for posting up a TU quote but not a CSyn one. This was a mistake, for two reasons.
One: it is indeed unfair, in case of conflict, to give more "speech time" to a party than the other; I have no bias myself about this affair, it just happened that TU got in touch with me and not CSyn at the time, but I should have known better.
Two: quotes are for news articles; they do shed light on a situation but in such case, they are beyond the scope of my initiative, which is - as I made amply clear on several occasions - recording history and NOT writing newsfeeds.
So from now on, I will not be posting up any quotes anymore - though I will add Astrophil's comment on that TU/CSyn topic, it's the least I can do.
I will however keep looking for inside comments on any given situation, but only as personal insight-gathering.
Also: it looks like this Sleeper will get an early wake-up call ! Big thanks to Novaquark and the CMs for adding me to the Vanguard Alpha Team, this is a much-appreciated validation.

Yeah, if your content is good people will subscribe. As such, I'd advise working to increase your quality. I didn't hear you speak once in your "commentary" and the game was incredibly laggy. Most of the other videos are recorded from a phone. To create videos that people will want to watch, you should be recording off of at least a decent PC (or mac, if it is decent) that can run the games at medium specs with 30fps. You also need to insert yourself into the game for people to want to watch it. People do not watch let's plays to just see the gameplay, they watch for the personality of the person(s) playing. There is also nothing related to DU, so I don't think anyone here will be particularly interested.
I do not say these things to be mean, but to provide feedback.

Hi Neolithic and welcome to our forum.
Before jumping to conclusion about "somebody has copied/stolen your work" and generate drama, it's important to be sure that authors of these websites haven't just done a collaborative work, or used the same type of CMS (Content Management System), as this would explain why they are similar on the format aspect. For these reasons, as long as the content is not copied, please contact the authors. Moreover, this forum is not the place to start accusing people (read the forum rules)
Thank you for your understanding.

As the game is in development the features and systems in place will evolve and are subject to change over time. Once the game launches the organizations, the members and the information held here will be synchronised with the game world. The organization structure will be composed of Members and Legates with different roles and/or responsibilities. For more information about Dual Universe Organizations and what they will become in the future, check out the Devblog!
A “Legate” status is currently NOT reversible (it is planned to be reversible at some point though), so choose your legates wisely! What you do here matters, so be careful what you promise!

ForlornFoe reacted to Peregrin in Dual Universe Lexikon
So someone on Discord expressed his opinion that Dual Universe has yet no history and that "true history" will begin after game goes live.
I beg to differ.
As far as the game is concerned, "history" started when J.C. began musing with the idea of a server technology able to sustain a single-shard editable world, back in 2011. As far as we players are concerned, "history" is right now. We're living it. It has already started.
That person probably - and rightly so - meant that recording current "history" was kind of irrelevant, since few of what we see today (projects, organizations, hierarchies, roosters, blueprints and so on) will endure the harsh reality of actually having to do stuff to happen ingame.
This is all a dream for now (the term "Sleepers" was not choosen randomly by your humble chronicler, mind you).
However, when you wake up after a vivid dream, though most of it is gone the moment you open your eyes, some of it remains: fuzzy yet marking oniric memories, that might shape your day...
... or even inspire the rest of your whole life.

ForlornFoe reacted to ATMLVE in A polite request that all members of these forums please be more conscious about what they quote in their messages
Frequently there are new topics which contain large amounts of text, i.e. people who type up a lot of what may be on their mind about the game, and then post it. People who reply to this topic then quote the entire original post in their reply even though they are the first one replying, and then they themselves may only respond with a sentence or two of their own. In situations like this, I think we can all figure out what you are responding to, without the need of a quote... If there are zero replies, it is quite unnecessary indeed to put the entire original post into your reply as a quote.
The same goes for all of the first few messages in a topic. If you are responding to the original post, even if you are the third or even fifth reply, you do not usually need to quote the whole thing; a topic can be read like a conversation. A quote is for longer discussions where you are replying to specific other posts; or, if the topic is something like multiple pages, then it is of course much more appropriate to quote the original post. If you believe that if you do not quote the original post people may be confused with which post you are responding to, then in that particular situation it is more appropriate to put the quote in. Of course, if you are responding to a post that isn't the original, then by all means quote who you're responding to!
The thing about these forums is that quotes are black with white text, and regular posts are a different shade of black with a different shade of white text. It is not always easy to immediately identify where a quote ends and where the post begins; and when I go into a new topic and see a three paragraph original post, then scroll down to find the first three replies are all quoting the entire original post and responding with a just few sentences of their own, it just makes everything a pain to read, especially on mobile (the desktop mode of mobile that is).
I point at no one in particular, and take no hostile action against or have an ill feelings towards anyone that does what I'm advocating against. It's just something I've noticed a lot and feel the forums would be cleaner if people just put a little more thought into whether or not they actually need a quote in their post.
That's the point of this whole topic; please just put a little bit more thought into what you are quoting when you reply. Ask yourself if it is really necessary.

ForlornFoe reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in WAIT...MONTHLY GAME TIME?
Hi Lexator and welcome on our forum.
To answer your concerns:
- Yes, Dual Universe will have a monthly subscription. We are aware that it's not a model appealing to all people and we don't try to everyone, because it's impossible. Also, due to the specificity of the game (costs higher in terms of server infrastructure), the team has come to the conclusion that the subscription model will be the only one viable on the long term. However, we have managed a way to play without paying a subscription. For more information, read below.
- The game won't cost anything, and expansions will be free as well. You will only have the monthly subscription to pay. You will even have free trial period.
- The DAC enable people who can (and are willing) to pay a Monthly subscription to be able to help paying the subscription for those who can't. DAC will be sellable in-game for in-game money (Quanta). So if you gather enough Quanta during your free trial period, you will be able to use the in-game money to buy a DAC from another player without spending real life money. Everybody wins: you don't have to pay a monthly subscription and the player who sold you a DAC - generally people who have more income and less available play time - will be able to gather enough Quanta for the activities they are focusing on, despite their limited available play time.
In any case, we are not currently planning to drop the monthly subcription model.
This has already been discussed over and over on the forum, many people have backed this project knowing this will be the monetization model, so a new topic asking about that won't change anything. We're planning on the long term, and with another model, the team is convinced it wouldn't be possible to make a durable game.
Best Regards,
Nyzaltar.

ForlornFoe reacted to SilverLily in Americans VS. Everybody else (See: Imperial VS. Metric)
I think that regardless of what unit you chose you need to keep your entire org on that same unit, furthermore i think that you need to try and get anyone who you will be trying to communicate with in battle (like your allied orgs) on the same system. I think that it's inevitable that DU will eventually be using the metric system simply because of the number of people using the metric system IRL compared to the people using the Imperial system IRL.

ForlornFoe reacted to Lord_Void in UNIVERSAL CONCEPT
Hello and welcome to the forums! It seems you do have a few misconceptions, which is okay! We are here to help! Like was mentioned above, everyone starts in the exact same location, so the problem in the beginning will probably how to get away from people. While the universe is procedurally generated (and therefore theoretically infinite) it is only as big as the section which players have mapped. Players must build stargates to get to other solar systems, a process which may take months. As a result, the universe will start small and expand over time.
There will only be one server which everyone plays on at the same time. It will be BIG, but interacting with other people will be a very very common occurrence. I hope I managed to answer some of your questions. Feel free to ask any more questions you have and we will do our best to answer them all. Also, I would recommend checking out the dev diaries and FAQs.

While yes, eventually people will be able to respawn at ressurection nodes, that won't eliminate social interaction at all.
In addition to that, at the start, we will only be able to reach a few planets. We won't be able to expand until certain advances are made.
Basically, we won't have any trouble finding each other.

Quite ironic there. You have all this time been arguing for only one sort of player. The "i must always strive for a bigger ship" solo player. I think there's a much broader variety of players you would hurt by having it your way than vice versa.
