I still think for the MMO part of the game, later on should be introduced some NPC and Creatures.
not vendors, that would be left for players,  but some kind of enemy many players need to team up to face.

LynkxDev reacted to Kurock in Bounty System: fun, fair and less abusable
With the bounty system being the next stretch goal, I thought it was high time we take a look at what it could mean to "set the bounty and put a price on somebody's head".
For me at least, there are three factors that are important in a bounty system:
Fun: That bounty hunting *feels* like bounty hunting, not an unlucrative fetch quest.  That it is challenging to succeed at collecting a bounty and the bounty provides a suitable reward. Fair: The average player is (relatively) safe.  The system should ensure that the game does not devolve into a gank fest. Less abusable: Ideally a system should *not* be abusable at all, but in an MMO setting where alt's are cheap, this is very difficult to achieve.  So minimizing abuse is the goal here. First, I will go through how MMO's in the past, present and future will have done their bounty system and then give a suggestion of one that could work in Dual Universe.  This might get a little long, so strap in or just skip to the suggested system at the end.

    Past: Ultima Online
I have fond memories of my years spent in this fantasy MMORPG in the early 2000's.  PvP was changed multiple times over the course of the game and a bounty system was one aspect of PvP.

This was "justice system" which could be triggered when a player was murdered by a player killer. Usually after a number of murders, a bounty from the victims own pocket could be placed on the murderers head.  A list of bounties could be looked up at a nearest bank.  If the murder could be found, killed, butchered and his head returned to a guard, the full bounty would be awarded.

In some cases the head could be ransomed back to the murder or the murder would suffer a stat decrease for a defined period. In other cases, the murderer would lose his own money from the bank and it would be placed on his head as a bounty.  In yet other cases the murderer would suffer stat penalties for dying at the hands of a "blue" player.

In short, there were many different variations, but most revolved around the concept of a justice system specifically targeting perpetual player killers.

    Present: EVE Online
There is no justice here: only money.

Bounties in EVE can by placed on anyone, by anyone. And everyone can see all the bounties.  But a player having a bounty does not give all other players the right to kill that player anywhere, for example a bounty hunter attempting to collect in high-sec will still be attacked by the ever vigilant defenders, CONCORD. Although any where else, all bets are off.

The bounty is not paid to the bounty hunter in full, but is instead based on the value of the bounty targets destroyed ship starting at 20% of the actual bounty value. While this system reduces collusion to split the bounty between the bounty hunter and target, it also reduces the potential earnings of a bounty hunter, making bounty hunting less viable.

    Future: Star Citizen
I say "future" because the game is not technically released yet.  The idea is that the bounty system is a justice system: bad guys (both PC and NPC) could have a bounty and good guys attempt to collect it.  That's it. Moving on.

But wait, you say, surely there is more?  Well yes.  But at this point it is conjecture.  For example some bounties may be "capture alive" some may be "dead or alive" perhaps depending on their misdeeds.  Star Citizen plans to have a legacy system where, after a random amount of lives , characters are permanently killed and replaced with their offspring. The offspring do get a bit of inheritance (and/or debt) and there is a slight neutralizing of reputation.  The bounties will probably simply disappear on death.

The take home point here is that this is a justice system.

A note on abusing bounty systems
The simplest way to abuse a bounty system in a free trade game is to have the bounty target and the bounty hunter collude.  The bounty hunter brings in the target and they split the bounty 50/50.
In Ultima Online, there was an inherent loss of skills at death and skills are really difficult to increase.
In EVE the target must lose more than the bounty but bounties are so unlucrative that they no longer feel like bounty hunting.
In Star Citizen, a character will have limited number of lives (for that character at least), so death may mean losing that incarnation of your character.
But why collusion is not an issue is that it requires trust.  Trust that the bounty hunter will not just take all the money after the bounty target rolls over.
I am sure there are other ways to abuse a bounty system but these I leave for another post.
    Suggestion for Dual Universe
Dual Universe is about giving players tools to run systems, not to have systems run the players.  That said, none of the above example bounty systems really tick all the boxes. So a suggestion is as follows:
Create a bounty: A bounty can be placed on anyone by anyone (minimum amounts on the bounty apply).  This moves the bounty system away from being a justice system tied to reputation and makes it another useful tool in the DU belt.  This, on its own, does break the "fair" goal, since anyone can be targeted but a single point does not a system make. Read on.
Get the contract: A bounty contract can only be picked up at a special terminal and is chosen from a randomly generated list of say 10 nameless bounties with a last known location (with a possibility of a reroll within a set time frame). Only those with the correct bounty contract can claim the bounty.  This means a list of bounties may be optionally published, but they will have no effect since only allowed bounty hunters with the correct contracts will be able to collect.  This makes investing into bounty hunting skills viable as it would be possible to tier bounties.
But why contracts?  This means the game won't devolve into a griefer gank-fest.
Accept the contract: Once a contract is accepted, the bounty's name is revealed can track the target, the name remains unknown. A bounty hunter can only have a set number of bounty contracts active at one time and this does not preclude others from gaining the same contract. There should be some potential for competition after all. Also there is no auto tracking built in at best a proximity beep.
Completing the bounty: The bounty hunter kills the target and gains the full bounty amount.  A bounty should be completed within a time frame (say a month) of being accepted or the bounty hunter will suffer a penalty (e.g. monetary loss and/or temporary loss of skills). Likewise the target could suffer a temporary loss of skills. This is a broad outline of a system and definitely still needs details filled in, but as you can see from the earlier examples, a bounty system is far from easy and straight forward.

Do you like what you see here? Do you have ideas for a bounty system? Feel free to discuss.

P.S. A further insightful video on the subject.

    Hey !! , I totally agree with you  \o/

I love to program AI and see how far i can push to create automated very smart drones, i think is a valid game play style.
So i could have a fully automated factory and mining plants etc.... and then could spend my time on RP and making friends on MMO environment.....
I'd totally love that the sandbox game give us the ability to fully program great AIs......

But... DU community don't think so,
so i think we will not see here great automation or programing freedom to make nice friendly drones or support robots.

In other games, people have beasts, demons, unicorns or w/e the flipping flak those Lolli classes in Korean Trash MMOs have these days, those things that are a crossbreed between hentai-echi tentacle fiends and the Flying Spaghetti Monster itself. Mental breakdown aside, what I would like Robotics to be, is having the ability to control a certain type of Robot "pet". I Agree (strange no)... I hope we can create a small droid pet, with our own design visual characteristics, from a cute Cat bot (like on EVA Movie)
to a Corean elven Loli,  (Like Chiii, from chobits),  that we can program simple commands and his behavior at least...

PS: My evil dream were to program a colony army of boots, that travels trough the universe working as colony, grouping in swarms , attaking, looting and self replicating, I'd become a mad scientist villain, while my creation becomes a nice antagonist in the game world.

From mining and transport to battle and information, robots are huge parts of sci-fi and futuristic television shows and movies, so why not bring them into Dual Universe? Being a solo player can seem nearly impossible if faced against larger pirate groups, or even managing larger ships, but if you had a hard working team of steel companions with you, it would be an even match! Host an industrial company and don't want to fork out thousands of your hard earned credits to pay for defense? Worry not! For you may manufacture hundreds of honest and loyal machines to keep your business in running order! C'mon, who hasn't wanted their own private army of battle droids?

Robotics can be a fantastic and unique addition to the universe that Novaquark is creating. Just like other technological skill trees, robotics can have it's own, unlocking you different components to make robots that are elite in fighting, mining, transporting goods, repairing, or other utilities. There are many possibilities for this addition, if you care to, feel free to add on any ideas to this post ????

    With all this said,

... the only thing i hope is that there will be some way to protect your bases, besides "the trust in other players army (factions army) etc"...

I'm a builder, not a fighter, nor have lot of time to be online because RL ... Life...
I'm  hoping to claim a land bellow the ark ship indestructible shield and real safe zone to build my ship factory and store. Also my home base !

And why i think players have to have a way to protect their constructs, (the stationary ones, home bases, storage, etc ... not ships)
other wise, the cities and buildings will be very blocky and ugly, simply because no one will spend months of work and energy to build and polish details on their homes base, to make it become like a great Sci-fi building... if at any time it can be destroyed and looted, and when the player logs in will discover that all his work went to hell...

I got it that attack and defense of player build cities and bases will be part of game pvp mechanics, but there is a lot of players that plays sand box because love to build, and don't like that much pvp, and i think if there has a way to protect your base, this ppl could be the owners of stations, markets and that "safe park zone" was mentioned before.

All times i've played at a minecraft server, when the server has no protection, use to be a full pvp server, where players only play casually, log in, make his base as hidden as possible, don't care about visual, just make it as simple and functional because they know the moment 1 single player find his base, this player will not rest until destroy it.
In other hand on minecraft servers with land protection (like golden shovel), we can see players making great bases, castles, sculptures... Working on develop complex automated machinery systems, etc.. Players works for months to make their homes great following his imagination, it makes the cities beautifully and unique
(while PVP players still join, built a simple and functional home and go to the fight have fun)
Now imagine how great will be the constructs inside DU with all this vox versatility ?! The cities will become great art galleries.
Like if i want to make and giant Iron statue in the middle of my city, just like a monument, it will take lots of real time and effort. I want it to stay there to other players to see, and don't want to need shield (thats destructible any way) or automated turrets to shoot everybody ho gets close to it..... but i obvious don't want to spend so much time doing it, for some one with a single bomb from space destroy it......

Builders put lots of effort on a game, hours and hours of work lost sleep, and they get very disappointed when suddenly see all destructed, and some will lose the interest in the game and never come back after see everything he built down to ashes, and all his stored mats gone... .

Thats why i think Dev team should think a little about that sandbox players that love to create and let its art for posterity,
and give them the opportunity to do this inside DU,will make the game more alive and beautiful,
Instead of make a full pvp kill or be killed game universe.....

BTW... just my point of view, and I'm a maker, probably the players that love action and war will disagree and say:
"Imagine all this beautiful city you mentioned above been attacked and burned to the ground, all that players crying on the chat....  WILL BE EPIC  \o/    !!"

LynkxDev reacted to EmperorSly in Hello everyone! I'm excited to be here!
I might have a somewhat different background than most people here as the only MMO I have really played is Eve Online, and even that I didn't stick with super long.  My background is mostly in strategy games (my current favorites are Stellaris and Rimworld but I've been playing since the original Starcraft).

I'm really excited for the concept of a single-shard, overwhelmingly player-run game without time dilation.  I'm also excited for the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a game like this.  I can't honestly see myself designing ships but I'm excited for almost everything else.  I can't decide whether I want to try and build a space empire, run a small mercenary organization, build an industrial/financial powerhouse, or just join a good organization and meet some great people.  So many things to do, so little time.

One question, if I may.  If I pledge now, can I upgrade the pledge later (its clear kickstarter backers can, but alas I did not back during the kickstarter)?  For instance, I was thinking of pledging gold tier now and upgrading to ruby (for the lifetime subscription) if the alpha and beta are promising.

    Hey great work !

Just giving you an Idea that i hope can help you.
instead of exporting on .csv, or program lots of functions..web services etc.. you could...

work on set up a public, read only MySql server,
would be very easy for you to "program", would only take few hours of coding
( or few minutes, depends how you store your data now, if already have it on one MySQL DB you don't need to program at all, just setup MySQL)

    a) Create a new DB, or duplicate your tables inside your DB
(if your server secure are good, duplicate the tables, if you can't fully trust, then now DB)

Create an SQL USER with permission to access only this tables, as read only, and multiple external login,
than negate everything else (specially his permission to change his password)

    c) Use a single line SQL update code to query your main DB and update the cloned public tables
set a server cron job to do it periodically (2 days .. 15 min ..1 min .... not matter its a simple SQL that uses very few server resources)

    d) public this MySQL socket to the community (give the IP of DB,  User / pass)

    see very simple and secure
since the data will be inside a MySQL server will be much easy to every one else that create their own modules, (of any language )
the clients will access and send single SQL queries, retrieving only data they need and receiving it clean and easy to handle.

This method is very low server resource demanding, and for sure wayyyy less demanding then a script runing to:
1- Query for the data inside the DB ,
2- put everything in arrays(that are at server memory)
3- call a module to right as .csv
4- access hard drives to store the .csv
5- and many clients conecting via http, (triggering a hole web server process pipeline) to download of .csv file
if you think of this, with 100 times more data than now and every 15 min ..... wow you will need a new server !

Now using the method i suggest:
1- clients log in MySQL server and send a single line SQL query, only for the portion os data they need, and close connection. Only this
Its a single line command that MySQL process very quickly and the data packages transfer is also very small, the port os faster and secure.
no other server or software are involved.

so thx for read this all and hope it can help.
    bye
