Mulligan reacted to NQ-Deckard in Look back at 0.25, look ahead at 0.26
The three-part devblog series we published in April, “The Future of Dual Universe”, addressed the cost of doing business and our plans for the ramp-up to launch. We took the first steps in delivering on those changes in May with the incremental 0.25 updates, adding more gameplay content and improving both performance and visuals.

    Our 0.25 updates brought players:
Voxel compression  Constructs LOD  Hauling Missions The Job Forum The first of a series of Challenges The integration of PopcornFX for visual effects And, of course, many bug fixes and additional improvements
If you haven’t had time yet to check out these changes, we released some videos showcasing them. Watch this video for a closer look and missions and challenges and this first look at the new visual effects.

About the latter, It was fun to watch the real-time reactions from our Twitch streamer community as they saw the changes for the first time.

Now that 0.25 is wrapped up, development is underway for our next big milestone. Codenamed Apollo, the update centers around the first phase of a major mining revamp. The addition of asteroids will provide rare and precious ore, which in turn will create opportunities for conflict as the hunters become the hunted. To that end, PVP will receive a first wave of balancing changes and the introduction of shields. Keep an eye out for devblogs on these topics!

In the meanwhile, we’d like to invite you to post your follow-up questions about the changes we introduced in 0.25 in this thread. In turn, we’ll take the best questions for an upcoming Q&A. Your insights and constructive feedback go a long way not only in helping us identify any lingering issues that should be addressed but are also helpful in how we can make things better in future updates.

The AC has grave concerns over intel received this last week of missions being introduced into the universe. There are several groups of shady organizations delivering contraband out of Feli to several surrounding planets.

These shady organizations in question have been disguising dangerous shipments as mundane and routine ore and mineral shipments, such as scandium and chromium. Core Samples from these intercepted shipments are rumored to have been transported to the AC's home world where their best and brightest scientists will conduct further analysis. These materials can ABSOLUTELY not reach the hands of citizens for it could be devastating to the population!

The AC has formed the largest fleet the universe has ever seen to combat this threat and stomp out illegal and dangerous activities. Effective immediately all vessels seen attempting to leave Feli must stop and submit to cargo inspection or be immediately disabled.

All civilian traffic is warned that a convoy of AC haulers transporting valuable space fuel for these operations will be transported to the planet of feli at 3pm EST. This convey is being guarded by the AC fleet and unidentified vessels will not be allowed to approach.

    Hey everyone,
so the event was a few weeks ago but no one talks about what happend their.
At the moment when at every PVP Battle something wierd happens and an Member from Hyperion taken part of it, everyone says that Hyperion is using Cheats or Glitches.
Yes the two ships which takes part of this Battle uses Stacked Elements and Burried Elements, but both is allowed from NQ at the moment and thats really not the Problem.

After this Battle we dont know what happens, so we decided to do some research. We figured out one really big Problems that game has at the moment.
We have this Information a really long time but i dont know why my Leadership or NQ didnt put an offical Statement on the Forum or so.

    So what we figured out:
If your ship gets enough DMG from PVP fights your PC uses much ressources.
In this Fight the most AC members shoot with Railgun which makes good Damage but the Damage per Seconds are low. Both Hyperion ships shot with laser which has after Cannons the highest DPS.
Both Ships got 4 Seats of Laser which means per Ship 24 Lasers. At the moment Hyperion engaged the Boo Ships their getting so much damage in an shot time that their PCs are "Burning".
The pc off the Pilot is the "bottleneck" in this Part, on his PC the Ship gets calculated. But the biggest Issue in PVP fights at the moment where the Damage at the Voxels, at every shot your PC Downloads the "new Voxels" of your ship. The Boo Ship got a really big Part of Gold Voxel which creates microvoxels with every shot/damage so your PC Downloads really much Voxel changes.

We tested it and the Download is the biggest Problem in the actual PVP.
My PC in the Video got:
    i7-8700k(overclocked to 5.0Ghz), 32GB Ram, Readon RX 6800XT, Samsung 970Evo M2 and and 1Gbit Internet Connection.

    First test
11 Gunner, 50 Missiles, 4 Railguns to a Plate of Gold Voxels
Most shots missed, network spike 40Mbit/s, lowest FPS around 20

    Second Test:
8 Gunner, 48 Lasers to a Plate of Gold Voxels
Min of FPS: 2, Network spike to 254Mbit/s

    Third Test:
8 Gunner, 48 Lasers to a Plate of Iron Voxels
Min of FPS: 5, Network spike to 159Mbit/s

    Fourth Test:
    Ethernet Limited to 16MBit/s
8 Gunner, 48 Lasers to a Plate of Iron Voxels
Min of FPS: 5, it takes around 2 Minutes to load every Voxel Change.

You can watch these Results in the Video:

One thing I would like to add to the discussion is that it’s a rather known issue that when a ship starts taking a lot of voxel damage the game lags for that person involved.
Also note we out numbered boo by quite a lot and had a lot of ships/gunners in the fleet.
When the ac fleet first was entering the pvp zone the very first ship in range was a HVC ship which most of the fleet started shooting at once as we flew by, 10 ish ships shooting at once on one target, the first reported bit of lag.
Next when we started moving deeper in the pvp zone we ran into a second target, the blitz ship. We free engaged the few ships and after chasing HVC off the field we had 11? Ships shooting a single massive blitz gold ship at once.
I believe the issue you guys experienced was just how many more ships we had all shooting just a few targets causing the lag.

Sorry you guys had issues and ultimately I hope nq look into it. We were happy for the fight though regardless

Yeap. We cancelled the event due to lack of people wanting to go to that event. Shit happens. Also, it was on a Friday during a work day for NA. Can't have everything.
LOL. Yeap, you got us. Our people only want to mine enough to PvP once in a while. I honestly can't blame them. We're mostly PvPers and a majority of us don't enjoy the rest of the 'game' enough to 'play' mining simulator 3,000 just to chase haulers that delete their cargo when they come under fire, or warp away. Not really our idea of engaging game play. So we play other games, we play DU when we feel like doing the things that DU has to offer, and PvP every once in a while.
    "Oh Noes! BOO is DYING!"
    Sure thing.

I already stated that if the AC had brought their A Game, then BOO would have been in trouble. We were just looking for cheap thrills and memes. And here we are.

Also, don't worry, we're still here. Seriously. We're just waiting for the game to actually get good.
You guys play your way. We'll play ours.

That's the point of a sandbox MMO.

I can agree with you on a few things here.

Yes, BOO with respect to DU has a serious activity issue because when 0.23 came along we made the choice to spread out into other games to maintain the BOO community since DU was in serious depression (in more ways than one).

Now our solution has in turn become both a blessing and a curse. Because some games that our members have trickled into have vested interests (in terms of time and money... that could've went to NQ). So returning to DU, even if it makes a comeback, will be a tough choice in where they spend their time.

The current mechanics that exist in the game:
do not cater to Exploration in any form Are poor from a PVP perspective Are bugged to high hell which further pisses people off at times Are incredibly imbalanced Are too restrictive in ways it shouldn't be BOO at large has not rejoined DU in massive numbers but we're watching and waiting for NQ to put up a legitimate release that makes PvP worth engaging in and makes the game actually fun.
Not some release that makes the game feel more like work and less enjoyable.

The Event did help to bring some of us back into the game... but it may be brief... who knows. Really... deep down... we're happy that the community gave us something to destroy. However, the frequency of these types of events are not enough to keep us glued to DU for longer than a week.

As other members have said, the MAIN thing we care about is PVP. To expect anything else from us would be foolish. If PVP in one game is shit then we'll leave and find PVP elsewhere.

To be clear the reason ATOM was there was because the last public event BOO attempted to form and crash it but just couldn't get the numbers. The only being there because atom was narrative is a little weak.

BOO has a real activity problem and can't seem to keep their members playing, their actual presence in space is very rare. They can field the numbers to put out a fleet every month or so.

The real story here is how badly BOO got beaten without AC even having to form. half our fleet were starwars event ships and the non atom AC people were just participating in the event and reshipped once we saw BOO on grid.

I hope the event encourages more BOO members to play and stop resorting to discord and forum shit posting.  it would be nice have an enemy that's an actual threat.

Now we know energy and what not is coming.  But that is only one step in an on going balance.  Right now L weapons can still hit the smallest shit in the game, so no need to ever use M weapons.  Also range is huge factor so L core also has that in spades too.

    - Cross section needs to go further.  Reduce probability even more for ships with smaller cross section.

    - Probability of hit needs to be also tied to how much damage is applied.  So if my L railgun has a 60k volley dmg, and I have 50% probability, and I actually land a hit, I should NOT do 100% of my volley damage.  This could be RNG'd to any degree, but something along the lines of 20%-80% and some adjustments based on probs.  100% probability means 100% damage.

    - Rework/Reduce voxels HP and resists.  Not a complete "nerf" but definitely lowered in some areas.  Also mix and match some resist "holes" so choosing ammo types can matter, but make it in a way that not 1 or 2 voxels are OP.  Tonight on stream 3 Small core pvp ships went out to fight, on stream.  They shot eachother for 2 hours. No one died.  This is a game above all else.  THREE ships, shooting for hours, and NO ONE DIES is terrible game design.  Fix it.

    - Remove XS guns from the game.  They are worthless, and will always be worthless.  In space anyway.  Make Small guns be able to be used on XS and S cores.  And with max skills you can get 3 S guns tied to 1 cockpit of certain guns to give those "fighters" a little boost for later gameplay.  Maybe stick to 2 rails and 2 missiles to a cockpit, but 3 for lasers and cannons to aide in their terrible range.

    - Weapon HP.  Its completely out of whack.  L weapons base hp is around 174k.  M is around 6k or so.  Total garbage.  increase M to around 80k base.  Increase S hp to around 40k base.

    - Element Lives in PvP.  L weapons are devastating and should be treated as such.  Use RNG so that when an element is destroyed in pvp, it has a 20% chance of taking 2 lives away from the element instead of 1.  Keep M weapons to always take away 1 life.  Small weapons when they destroy an element have a 20% chance of taking 0 lives away (the element still goes red and needs repair, just no life was reduced off the element count).   This reasoning goes hand in hand with the surgical strike to make it a viable pirate option, and also not too over-powered in its ability to target elements on an enemy ship.

    - Surgical strike.  Give a reason to sometimes use Small weapons.  Make them able to target actual Elements.  Make a drop-down menu in the gunner seat.  Voxels can also be an option to target.  Use some RNG, so how it would work, is if I choose "adjusters" then when I shoot, and the game attempts to calculate my hits, it will search for adjusters, if found, it has RNG of 50-80% chance to hit an adjuster (based on new talents to train) and the time it misses it picks random like currently is.  Since its the smallest weapon in the game, it wont be "over-powered" but a it now makes S cores a viable option if you bring say 8 to swarm a L capital, and that capital ship only has L weapons and no support.  This leads to more indepth approach at how to shoot/disable ships.  And options for pirates, but also its not over-powered cause the reduced damage and range of Small weapons.  It also makes sense because they are smaller and you need to get closer to your ship to attempt a more precise hit, as opposed to a L railgun shooting a massive round at a ship from almost 2 su away.  M and L weapons would be too "large" for surgical strike, as they leave too big of a damage radius to attempt it.

PvP balancing should be ongoing, but as it stands now, L core and L guns are only viable, and no signs of it changing at all, or anytime soon.  If this is how it will be even 12 months from now, you will have a stale game because no one wants to play something where there is only "one way" to play or else you get rolled on.  By making these changes (or any similar) you now make M weapons the "go to" as they well should be.  As they have decent range and dmg, can apply that damage to larger and smaller ships more easily.  By doing this, you also give S a niche reason to be used (as opposed to never right now) and L weapons are more seen as WAR ships trying to do devastating damage, but also big L core capital ships would need some sort of "support" as smaller M cores and S cores could swarm and never get hit, forcing people to think about how they field ships and fleets, and adding more roles to a fleet to maximize their pvp "potential" whether that be pirates, or a war machine looking to annihilate their enemy.

Well, my press presence was little bit chaotic and last moment one (special thanks for guys who helped me to get into action -- @IvanGrozniy, @personality_matrix, @SpiceRub). Visuals/action itself covered much better by my more technicaly sophisticated collegues, streamers (special cheers to @Shamsie, great content). But I still want to share some impressions and thoughts about what happened.

    Subjective mode, obviously.

    Results

My take -- its proverbial "tactical victory" for BOO (& Auxilaries) with more kills and control over field. They still probably (and so far) most numerious, organized, well equiped and experienced fighting force of DU. Yet, its surely its not time to relax, because this position now obviously contested. In this regard last battle not a defeat for ATOM & Co. Not at all. Despite more losses, they gained valuable experience, made a statement. And often in history "statement made" much more important, then per se singular victory, because it start long, but very conseqentual chain of events.

    Political implications

I think its fair to welcome ATOM into "great powers" club, because fielding and more or less successfuly operating such battle group was not a small feat. Looks like @Mulligan humbly, but very methodicly grown his forces to very respectable level. If we assume, that other factions of AC awake and bring something to table too, balance of powers can change against BOO in favor of AC, if critical numerical superiority will be achieved. Still, options for diplomacy open for both sides and BOO obviously can go more long-term treaties to counter. With space-russians? Who knows.

    State of game/PvP balancing

    1) Game feels little bit drained on players, because even such big and active org as BOO, by my perception, stuggled to field more crews.
    2) I personaly don't like current system favoring exessive voxel armouring, especialy with gold. Its bad both on combat and strategical levels.
    3) Game still dangerously bugged, because some participants reported nasty desyncs and crazy things with always missing weapons. I hope NQ are working on this.

    So?

We need more of such good fighting. Good for game.

    LOCKDOWN UPATE:

After a week long LOCKDOWN sanctioned by the OPA at Talemai, things came to a head in a major way today.  Up to this point, all attacks were thwarted, and many haulers trying to smuggle ore in and out were disabled.  A battle of an estimated 30 ships engaged in space above the beautiful planet Talemai.  ATOM stood tall against overwhelming odds.  Damage and losses were taken on both sides, but rest assured propaganda from either side is surely to be broadcast all over the subspace transmissions in the days to come.

This violent attack against Talemai and the OPA has left the planet in a state of uncertainty.  It also begs the questions how the other planets will respond as the increasing number of people who live in the Inner planets continue to steal ore that rightfully belongs to the OPA.  One can feel it in the the air...a storm is coming.  Already there are reports of scientists of both the Inner and the Outer planets sending deep space probes and getting info sent back that there is an untapped Asteroid belt out in deep space.  Presumably with rich ores that would benefit any planet or faction who is able to set up mining operations. One can only think that this was only the first of many power struggles to come throughout the solar system...

What we do and the benefits we provide: We centralize many advertisements onto a single construct. This provides you with quality leads, consumes fewer cores, reduces overhead, improves everyone's game performance, creates fewer obstacles at the marketplace, and makes for a cleaner game world. What is and isn't allowed: Just a few rules and limitations when advertising with us. Pricing: Completely free, for the time being. Setup: Instructions on how to start advertising, the intro steps are simply setting you up in our discord, mostly for my sanity. Future Plans: Where the future may lead along with our next big step if this is a hit. Final Thoughts: Wrap up.

What we do and the benefits we provide:

Dual Universe Classifieds (DUC) seeks to improve advertising inside Dual Universe through the consolidation of individual advertisements into bulk platforms on a single extra small core. Unless you've already seen our construct at the ten marketplaces around the Arkship (against the marketplace near the onramp and elevators), you can watch a quick 2:37 tech demo of the platform we're currently working on. The design and code are a work in progress and not final.

Inspired by advertising that occurred during earlier Alpha testing phases,  DUC's methods of gathering in-game ad's onto a single platform solves the problems we've identified:

Quality Leads: Players that specifically search for your advertisement are more likely to be interested in your offering over random players.

Fewer Cores and Materials Consumed: When every construct counts, having additional core slots for advertising forces a choice to be made; either get your name out there or have more constructs available to your organization. Offloading your advertisements onto us frees up these cores and materials so you can build more constructs.

Reduced Overhead: No one wants more work to do. By letting us handle your organization's in-game advertisement distribution, we take some of that burden off of running your organization so you can focus on more important things.

Better Game Performance: Everyone knows that fewer constructs lead to improved game performance on all player's systems. With fewer screens and individual programming boards running, Dual Universe's servers have more resources for what counts while players can enjoy cooler and quieter desktops.

Our platforms can combine a large number of otherwise separate constructs with screens and Lua, into a single construct, with a single programming board (one per terminal, up to four on a construct) that runs on demand when a player wants to interact and view ads.

To view the ads at any of the four terminals on the platform, a lower touchscreen functions as a menu while an upper screen displays a selected advertisement in the form of an image or text, accompanied with any Lua for animation, custom font, etc. Lastly, at the top of the construct is a group of screens that flips between random ads every time a player deactivates the terminal below it for a total of 12 screens.
(the above benefit is theoretical and based solely on my perceptions both on and off the game, I do not claim to know if this actually has any perceivable impact on either the players or the servers)

Fewer Obstacles at Marketplaces: From ship shops to fuel stands, Lua pitches, and resource dispensers. It all takes up space in the game world, in particular, where players will frequently travel. Marketplaces are already victim to abandoned ships, advertisements shouldn't be making the situation worse, but they do by the simple act of taking up more space. If ads were all neatly organized on one construct, landing at the markets will be a little less scary.

A Cleaner World: While subjective, a cleaner gaming world feels more immersive than one filled with jarring advertisements competing for attention.

Better Reputation among the Community: Organizations that advertise with DUC and our more appealing solutions might gain more favor with other players than organizations that don't.

With all of the above in mind, the more advertisements our organization hosts, the more visible impact our efforts will have. Already over half a dozen organizations are running live ads with us. Eight might not seem like a lot, but would you rather have more constructs to navigate at the marketplace?

    ----------

    What is and isn't allowed:

Getting set up with advertising on DUC's platforms is easy. Before we do that, however, we need to specify what is and isn't acceptable.

    AD REQUIREMENTS:
    - For pure images, just a link to the image. Players are viewing our advertisements up close, so upscaling will not be a problem.

    - Complex advertisements with both text and associated images may have Lua code included with them.
    - Purely text ads may feature text with or without Lua formatting.

    AD RESTRICTIONS:
    1. Ads can be plain text, images, or both with Lua code. Additional support may be added as NQ allows.
    2. Links can be included, but they must be DU relevant. Links will be checked before going live.
    3. We are a neutral platform. Friendly banter is allowed with the other organization's or players consent, but do not use your advertisements to antagonize them.

Above all, use common sense when submitting an advertisement. If you think your ad will pose a problem with other players or breach any rules enforced by NovaQuark, it probably will. If you think you've landed in a gray area, please DM @DarkHorizon for clarification.

    Pricing:

Currently since we're only drumming up interest and cleaning up the marketplaces is a major objective, our service is entirely free with no surprise charges. With so few advertisers running live ads and a couple dozen orgs indicating some form of interest, applying a cost to our services doesn't make sense unless we're massively successful.

Once we reach that point, I may turn this into a monthly subscription with perhaps a couple of purchasable options like an instant update where if you change your ad, for an additional fee, we can send someone around to have the update applied right away as opposed to some point during the month where the monthly bill is sent out and all queued updates will be applied. Again, this is wholly dependent on our success, this isn't something I saw myself doing so we'll see where it takes us.

    Setup:

Now that we know what is required and what isn't allowed time to start advertising! If I haven't messaged you about this, it may look like a lot, but I assure you that the first steps in the first spoiler are only done once so I can get you set up in our discord server as long as you advertise for the same organization. Changing old ads for new ads is easy as it only requires the final two steps in the third spoiler.

Step One: Join our discord server since it will serve as our communication platform for any announcements or discussions. We will not be DM'ing announcements.

Step Two: Direct message me on Discord with the following:

If I have previously DM'ed you and linked you to this topic, I likely already have the info I need and will fill it in unless directed otherwise:

If you have an advertisement ready:

    Future Plans:

I'd previously stated that for now, we're just doing an initial run of ten platforms at each of the ten central marketplaces on Alioth. Further expansion around the planet and eventually other planets and even spaces like player cities as demand grows.

I'm working with my partner, @eldrake, to update the underlying inner workings and UI. What you currently see displayed on the terminals is still a work in progress, and further updates will come in due time. A couple of those ideas are:

Pagination Categorization (Recruitment, services, sales, twitch streamers, etc) Scrolling through the ad menu with key presses. Submitting multiple ads while retaining a single space on the menu. A random ad might come up with each press from the menu, or you might be able to toggle through ads the same way as menu pages.
As far as more physical ad constructs go like ship shops, dispensers, Lua presentations, and everything in between, I'm planning to further expand things into a center that I'll run in my territory on the Sanctuary Moon. Advertisers would be able to place their constructs just like they currently do at the markets, and they'll be allowed to edit their constructs without needing DUC's consent though it remains to be seen if the player will still retain the core, or if ownership will be transferred with edit permissions given. From there, players will be able to VR or walk into the center to observe and interact with these constructs in the same way as they would now. Since only one construct is advertising whatever the advertiser is pushing, the same benefits apply here as they do at our terminals.

If the current idea is a hit and interest shows up, then this may very well come about in the future, and that should help out at the marketplaces even more. I'm excited just thinking about it.

As previously stated, I may monetize things in the form of a monthly subscription, but that all depends on how things turn out. Removals will cost less on demand but likely be free if not. Again, I might even do updates strictly on a once a month basis to keep things under control. It depends on how many advertisers we get and how far we spread. Who knows, when the mission system finally drops, updating these terminals would be an excellent side quest for random players.

Unless and until I start charging, donations of quanta and materials will always be appreciated, especially if/when I start working on that physical advertisement center.

    Final Thoughts:

You do not need to be a member of the organization to advertise with us. It will likely be limited it to the staff anyway. Joining won't accomplish very much and be more or less an association and show the extent of the organization. Especially with the limit on the number of organizations you can join now, I don't expect anyone to anyway.

Advertising might not be a problem now, but I don't want to see this become one in the future, which is why I'm acting now to ensure it doesn't happen.

If you like the idea and wish to advertise, CTRL+F 'Setup:' and follow the steps.

If you have any questions or suggestions, I encourage you to comment down below.

If you want to collaborate and join in on the project, let me know, and I'll do what I can to arrange things.

Updates and announcements will be posted here as they arise. I can't wait to see where this goes!
