I disagree. By your logic we should then only allow building to the real life designers. Why should coders get preferential treatment, especially when they will be a smaller portion of the player base. It seems unfair and illogical to cater to one......ohh wait.

Actually no, you are right. I absolutely agree that only real life coders should be able to script ships, and just so that I am not a hypocrite I also suggest that only people with design degrees should make stuff in game. After all, I don't want to have to look or work with terribly designed voxel creations.

If you don't know how to design, find someone who does and pay them to do the work you need done, or learn how to design yourself.
(note to the laymen: Good design does not mean just pretty. Good design is the perfect marriage of aesthetics and function and just because you can lay down a voxel does not make you a designer.) /sarcoff

That's a good question. The chances are factions will make their capital worlds "pretty" and neat, while destroying others so they can build even taller skyscrappers and even more ships.

The planets are quite large, about 35 km radius to 100 km radius, and they are procedurally generated, so, you could have a significant amount of worlds, therefore, your worrying in unwarranted good sir. Plus, ugly planets make for the best hideouts for pirates or outlaws, so, everyone wins. And panets will be minable about 2 kilometers deep, so they won't be THAT ugly

Lad, the fact is it can't be done. Programming is math, mostly. And I know from experience, that many people have no idea how to solve an equation or what the correct procedure, to solve a mathematical problem, is. Now, add the fact that programming is essentialy, you yourself, building an algorithm through written commands... do you think there can be a brick, or a puzzle piece that can cover every possible mathematical paadigm? They can't.

As I said, limited and very basic wiring that everyone can use to make a ship flyable like a jet, sure, highly precised, pitch-perfect cruise controls, keypress pressure counted to the milisecond to emulate hitting the pedal at your own pace, that will take code, a lot of code to be in fact, possibly a hyper-loop of commands, just for the battleship to be able to roll and pivot off of another ship's lock-on.

Everyone here can take a pair or quad of bikes, add a motor and make an improptu car. But not everyone here can make a Lamborghini. Cheers.

P.S. : If anyone reading this is in high-school and makes the joke "math is stupid, I won't ever need it in my life" and want to build a good ship in Dual, starting studying pronto, and git gud at figuring out how mathematical boundaries work, they are quintessential to programming if you get them in your thinking process.

Freeloaders like the most of you are the reason why the gaming industry is such a cesspool of WoW clones and CoD clones.

Let me me be specifically clear.

You want quality, YOU PAY FOR IT. Go play some crappy Free-to-Play MMO some hacks released to milk idiots off their money buying "energy drinks" or materials to avoid grinding. Go play some legalised gambling scheme like CS:GO or every other mobile game there is, where you buy something and it runs a routette system which is rigged against you, so you will be addicted to gambling for the items you want.

Dual Universe is not a game for your freeloader mindset. Go ruin some other game and company. Cause that's what your free-to-play nonsense is going to do to NovaQuark. They will drive people away with the cheater fiestas and 11-year old sociopaths loading cheats and hopping in to ruin your day. They wil lhave to fire people, because most Free-to-Play players, DO NOT BUY CRAP, and then the company is going to be bought by private investors, who will force them to add "energy" in the game for every action you make, and then, the game will die, like Archage and every other Free-to-Play crap coming out of Korea.

It is perfectly clear. We are visited by some kind of extraterrestrial alien lifeform, and it try to communicate with us. But due to heavy pollution of Earth atmosphere, signals come somewhat distorted and obfuscate.

    Hi,

I know that DU is not planned to be easy, and scripting will be irremovable part of game mechanic. It is something cool... but write hundreds lines of code can be bothersome task for non-programmer players; beside this, scripting is quite boring in form (you know - lines and lines of numbers and letters, nothing fancy).

So. Maybe we can made scripting mini-game itself and give it some interesting graphical interface, easier to understand by "normals"? Of course "text hard mode" will be always available as second option  and even "graphical programming" can have less options than text one, like "beginner" and "veteran" versions

I not talk about simplification of programming language itself, but more about some kind of GUI/IDE for that - with auto-complete and - most important - easy graphical interface like "blocks" of code for building apps. I know at last two projects, which use this kind of editors ; LEGO Mindstorm and Scratch. Here are pictures of programs build in them:

But average cost of subscription (WoW, EvE) is about 15 USD - and for reason. Devs do not charity work, they want to earn something too... 15 USD is normal market price for game like that... it is argument like "i want brand new porsche, but it must cost less than 1000 bucks". Sorry, quality must cost...

I've wanted to do some DU short stories, but I simply do not enough about the setting just yet really.

That said, I can see some short stories combined in to a novel depicting different peoples perspectives before the Ark ships were launched from Earth. The rich, the poor, the smart, and dumb all clamoring to give their family some hope for the future (Or something like that.)

    Anyways, good luck buddy!

This is wonderful idea! Maybe @CharlesAugustus will rather compile such storybook from other players novels, and with player-made illustrations rather than write whole book by himself? We can do it as mini-comptetion, maybe with help of @NQ-Nyzaltar.

True story this. I once helped a friend of mine set up a Minecraft server for his RP/Fantasy Minecraft theme. He was one of the most reknown for his designs of spawn areas in the minecraft community in europe, until real life got in the way. Anywho, when I shown him DUAL and how it would work, he was like

"So James... I get to build spaceships out of voxels... and then I can program them... and they won't have to look like cartons of milk... when's the Alpha starting you said?"

If an avid and borderline fanatic minecrafter like him that called Landmark a "wannabe" (when it was not a corporate cashgrab that is), said something like that, I can't see lesser fans of minecraft not swarming towards DUAL. IT's like Minecraft servers merging into one, super-server.

    I must admit, I'm a little confused.

Novaquark released the in-game pre-alpha footage. It looked awesome, it was smooth, it conveyed all of the tech they promised and it showed how it was possible to have the vision they have.

Yet, when I went on the subreddit, 133 subscribed.

I come on the forums, and there are just a couple dozen active people.

WHAT is HAPPENING. I feel like I've gone insane.

How can this game not have a larger following? We've been griping as a community for a game like this for years. Years and years. Practically every day there are posts in Space Engineers of people wishing for a larger scope, more multiplayer. Every day on the No Mans Sky reddit about wishing for multiplayer and more customization. Every day in modded minecraft about something new and progressive but somehow keeps that emergent game-play.

These are very different games, every one of them, and yet the ideals they dream for are almost all contained in Dual Universe.

There are so many broken promises out there, Unsung Story, Broken Age, Areal, Sticks and Starships, Planet Explorers, on and on. Games that never even made it to the stage that Dual Universe is showing as a PRE Alpha.

I'm telling all of my friends. I'm sharing photos and videos like a 35 year old woman who just got her third cat. And I hope you are all doing the same.

This is a game we have all been waiting for for a long time. Let's make sure they know it.

Noble idea, but as (poor) writer myself, I suggest another approach: write what do you "feel" the best. Writing to someone else ideas can be very, very frustrating and somehow "false" - every writer have his/her own scope and knowledge about specific set of topics, and writing something outside this can lead to poor results.

In short words: go with your heart, rather than poll

And of course publish it here! Any path you choose, I wish you godpseed and a lot of inspirations!

Not quite. There is difference between object class "CONSTRUCT" as big as a planet (certainly possible) and object class "PLANET" which should behave like CONSTRUCT (e.g. move).

So you will probably can (give enough time, manpower and resources) construct "artificial planet", which move like ship, but you can't "convert" already existing planet into ship. In other topic was stated than due to mechanic limitations, planets will be stationary (no orbiting and so on).

In the end, effect will be the same, so why bother ;p

    PS: To be perfectly clear:

Death Star from Star Wars IV, V, VI = possible

Starkiller Base from Star Wars VII = impossible
