There must be some kind of upkeep or last logged on timer otherwise we will have tens of thousands claimed tiles by players who last logged into the game 6 or more months ago, and after 4-5 years many players will be living surrounded by ghosts and only way for them to play with friends will be to relocate. Usually MMO games have some kind of system to prevent players that quit to have assets in-game but nothing is known from Novaquark about what will be implemented in DU.

This is not crappy suggestion as imo industry only on static elements makes no sense if we can make huge moving constructs, luckily devs already said that dynamic cores might have industries in future but for now they want to keep it static. If we can physically (size wise) fit machinery on any construct and have enough power to run it then players should  be able to no matter if it is dynamic or static, flying fuel refinery or mobile ore processing unit. Also imagine if you we to embark on long exploration journey to nearest star system then it would be only logical that we can manufacture some stuff on our ship upon arrival without need start making bases, players could play like real nomads.

There are many games out there that have a "free" version that is severely gimped, and then a members/premium version with full content.  Mortal Online is just one example of that.  I believe DU may be going down that route as well, IIRC...

Subscriptions still work, and I imagine that's why most of us are here ^^

At this point in time and space it is really impossible to figure out what will happen and when, I am sure that there will be expansions that will change a lot in how we build ships.
Flying cubes in space are fine, if I would engineer space ships probably they would all be cubes due to easy of docking and forming bigger structures, no wonder minecraft uses cubes to build stuff and imagine specific size cubes with life support just sticking to each other and forming a city. Also storing ships inside other ships is easier if they are same size and simple shape.
From PvP perspective most important thing to know is - will there be armor and how it will work, maybe 20 layers of armor would be better than shields, maybe we will have ships with huge "shields" in front to absorb damage, maybe we will have ships as small and as fast as possible so they are harder to hit.
But judging by how much money and time players are spending on cosmetics for their avatars I would say that majority of players will care what they are flying and how it looks like, but the beauty of Dual Universe is that we players will develop and change together with universe around us and our constructs will evolve over time, will be a lot of fun even if we end up flying giant cubes
